Adelaide FC - 20 years

Talk on the national game

Adelaide FC - 20 years...

Postby BoundaryRider84 » Tue Mar 22, 2011 1:21 pm

My memories from first game.
1. Peter McIntyre lining up for the first shot at goal ever, and kicking into Chris langford on the mark.
2. Simon Tregenza having 4 bounces down the outer side.
3. Eddie Hocking selling candy to big John kennedy and then kicking a point.
4. Obviuosly Bones McDermott getting flattend by Dermott Brerton, moments after a young Matty Robran limped to teh bench for the Hawks.
5. The final score against the eventual premiers for 1991!!!!

Anyone care to share their recollections on the beginnings of the club and the first game?

Their fondest memories from 20 years supporting?

Fire away. :D

You're all good boundary rider, I was thinking about re-posting the topic on the general forum anyway.

No doubt there's be plenty of people on here willing to post their 'happest' memories of Adelaide over the last 20 years.

I actually barracked for Adelaide in that Hawthorn game. For one brief moment they were the team for all South Australians. Then the Advertiser came along.

Agree REB,the advertiser would post rubbish about the Crows,a player would fart and it would be front page on the fine aroma,it made me hate the team.Their would be other more important stories on other pages.Only when i lived in Melbourne away and didnt have to read or listen to the radio,i would start to enjoy watching them again.

Can remember bugger all about the game but seeing A Jarman dominated the game I think it would explain why I was a massive Andrew Jarman fan as 5 year old in 91/92/93 period.

Looking over the 20 years in general, I mentioned on the AFL YouTube highlights thread - it's probably hard for fans who are 21 or less to fully understand just HOW massive the Tony Modra phenomenon was, in terms of how heavily he was publicised, how every move became front page news and how everything he did was scrutinised. In between all of that, it's probably fair to say that he was one of the bigger reasons that some people followed the club at his peak.

He could also play a pretty reasonable brand of footy along the way, although his one dimensional style was one factor that cost his career at Adelaide. Certainly didn't disgrace himself one bit at Fremantle and had some fantastic games there, and well worth noting that he finished runner up in their best and fairest in 1999, something he didn't really get close to at Adelaide.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Probably unique to the other star full forwards was his soccer skills with the ball. Of course, the screamer during marks up at school was a "Modra".

I'll never forget the "trial game" against Essendon - sold out crowd for a trial game!
Vic media couldn't believe it, and to be honest I was also astounded.
It was my birthday that week, so some mates and I went into Jules after the game to celebrate. Saw Andrew Jarman, and he came over and had a drink with us for my birthday :D

We asked him what he thought about the club song "Here we go Camry Crows" and he explained it wasn't really our club song, just an advertising campaign the club had agreed to play over the intercom during matches, and that the club hadn't got around to deciding on a club song yet. We were glad to hear it, cos no way did we want to have to sing that stupid song when we won a Premiership ;)

I remember Eddie Hocking took a screamer over Langford I think.
rodney Maynard sneaking forward and kicking a few goals, and big Romani Negri looked like a gun. Played 1 more game i think (what happened there?)

Pickett steamrolling Biglands. Say what you like about Pickett. Norm Smith medallist who hit as hard as anyone to have played the game. Bias aside, what a hit!

The not so good a hit of Bickley on Wakelin.
