Your thoughts on your clubs draft picks

Postby BFG » Wed Dec 08, 2010 3:18 pm

thought i might start this up and see how everyone felt their club went on both NAB draft day and the rookie draft day?

personally i think the crows have done well enough, promoted the right rookies, picked up brodie smith who i believe should be a 200 game midfielder. tim milera from port adelaide in the rookie draft is a great pickup, very lively and creative. But by far the best decision they made was to draft the next micahel barlow/james podsiadly in Ian callinan from centrals! dual premiership player and this years jack oatey medallist. look forward to big things from him in 2010!

Ask me in three years. Far too early to tell. At this stage every single club 'can't believe that player x has fallen so low in the draft'. There will be only one winner, Gold Coast.

All Port's picks were in our recruiters' top 10 players so we did well too :)

Yeah all the players before your clubs first pick are overrated and wont amount to anything - no matter what club you follow! :)

I had this conversation with a mate who is local recruiting scout for an interstate AFL club ... After depressing me about all the players Norwood would potentially and likely lose, I grinned and said "Oh well, once the dust has settled tomorrow I look forward to every club coming out and saying we've hit the jackpot because we got every player we wanted"

He just laughed and said "Well there's not really much else they can say"

just out of personal interest more than anything and a little of topic, how do people get into that sort of role as a recruting scout? is it more of an "in the know" type position? just curious

Well the first thing you need is to 'be prepared'.

As much as i hate the Cows .... great move on there behalf drafting Callinan ... The bloke is an absolute superstar cut above SANFL level and a shame he hasnt already notched up 100 AFL games. No reason what so ever why he couldnt play 22 games this year. good luck to the bloke

A lot of it is yes.

But the key is start at the bottom and be prepared to work your way up. I am involved with the recruiting for a local TAC cup side which is a real eye opener in what is involved with the system.

Is it voluntary to start with pup in which if your good enough you get signed up on a contract?

You still get payed I believe valleys
You watch the game, the club usually give you some players to watch for, make notes on them.
You must then write a report and believe you speak via phone to the coach or one of the coaches one a week.
thats my understanding anyways

A lot of it is voluntary yeah.

Most of the staff recieve some help with petrol and that sort of thing but nothing substantial, I am lucky enough to be on a package for the year which involves a lot more incentives.
