THE AFL's blue-chip Friday night fixture is almost certain to be shown live and on a free-to-air station from 2012.
But more quality games will be snapped up by pay-TV broadcaster Foxtel under federal reforms to be announced as early as today.

The shake-up will lead to five of the nine home-and-away games each week being screened on Foxtel, including the new Saturday twilight clash.

And at least one Sunday afternoon game played in Melbourne could be moved from the traditional 2.10pm starting time to 3pm, allowing for a smoother transition into news broadcasts at 6pm.

I heard it described as a use it or lose it policy. The same will apply to all sporting events so the free to air won't be able to get away with buying rights to sport and then showing it on delay to suit it's scheduling. Hopefully that's how it works out.

Does this mean no weekly Essendon snoozefests?

The sooner the better, although it will be interesting to see if they move the starting time of the game so that the alcohol companies can get their advertisments on TV right from the start of the game as under current legislation they can't until 8:30pm.

Channel 9 were just as bad with Burke's Backyard!

Great news for footy fans, sucked in 7/9 who thought they could treat us like fools!

Hooray, Thank F**king god. I never thought they would wake up and actually think about showing Friday nights games live. They have, it's quite amazing really.

Hooray at last the networks will be dragged in the 21st century. Only 40 years too late just mention the word "HEIDI" to a TV Exec and they shake in their boots.

Not sure whether I think sacrificing FTA blockbuster games for live Friday night football is a good thing?!

x2, amen.

The only way they'll change things is if people stop watching delayed stuff. The Adelaide public are making a rod for their own back. We watch delayed TV (cos we have no choice) thereby increasing ratings and then complain we don't have live telecasts.
