25th anniversary of the first VFL draft

What a raid on the SANFL this turned out to be. I have extracted out the SANFL players taken in that very first draft. 37 in all I haven't worked out who never went over but the 2nd and 4th picks definitely didn't. It was a 3 year hold on the players from memory so those who didn't go ended up being drafted again like Darren Jarman drafted here by Melbourne who ended up being drafted by Brisbane I think later on and then almost was a Crow before signing with Hawthorn.

It was a list I did a while back and I filtered on anyone picked out of the state of SA because Mansell ended up playing for Glenelg. I don't know whatever happened to Glen Keast.

i figure a bloke picked up by Geelong from North Gambier in the very first draft would probably have a very interesting story behind him.

No probs, i cant find any records of him winning any mail medals.

I just found a little info on North Gambier and his was listed as a player who played in the VFL but was not on their club legends list which had about 10 ten blokes named.

Curious as to why they chose this bloke when they had a high percentage of players from the SANFL to pick from.

Played for glenelg in 1992. Played in our 1992 Foundation Cup winning team. Played 5 games early on and then finsished in the 2s. I know it has been fashionable to bag Justin McConnell ont his site but Glen Keast made Macca look like a combined version of the Gowans...

I think in those days you didn't nominate yourself for the draft but just got your name called out. Then it was up to the VFL club to negotiate with the player. There was a player retention scheme in SA that kept some players here up until the Crows came in. Others didn't go for whatever reason. They were older players than today's draftees who felt I guess that VFL was an option rather than today's players who strive for it.

Righto, I got it. A weird concept to start things off then really.

Who would've thought it would end up as such a structured event upon which the future success of a club desperately depends as it does now!

That sort of arrangement was in place until the mid 90s. Sam Phillipou was drafted by Footscray in 1992, but did not play for them until 1995.

I've got Glen Keast as playing the first three rounds of the 1992 premiership season, for one behind in Round 2.

It went something like this

VFL Club: 'It's only the SANFL, we'll draft them anyway'
SANFL Club to drafted player: '**** those guys you're staying'.

Instead of going to St Kilda Steven Sims went to North Adelaide in 1987!

Did Colin McDonald or Michael Templeton ever go to Brisbane?

Back in the early 90's when there were 52 on a list, it was common for a player to be drafted but stay at their SANFL club for an extra year, think Brett James and Scott Burns were two examples.

you can still do this now, but couldn't imagine any player doing this- the last one I can recall was Ben Holland when drafted by Fitzroy (then ended up at Richmond)

Patrick Dangerfield stayed home after being drafted to finish school. Although he might have played a couple of games.

Mr Beefy, Dangefield signed a contract with Adelaide and actually played some games late in that season as you said. He only stayed in Melbourne by agreement with the club to finish his studies. He came over and played a few games for West Adelaide as I recall. He was an exception these days.

Because the players nominate themselves for the draft and know it could be their only opportunity to play AFL they don't stay in their local state league anymore for experience sake as they used to 20 years ago.

Bit OT, but it amazes me that clubs can delist players after the draft, i.e. Hansen at WCE - surely there should be a cut off period to allow those delisted to at least be given the opportunity to pick picked up at the draft? I know that there is the PSD but surely its almost restraint of trade?

Interesting decision considering he was contracted for 2011 and they will have to include his 2011 salary in their cap. They must be real keen on someone cheap in the PSD

I spoke to Robin McKinnon from West Adelaide one day about being drafted. He told me he thought about it but was happy to stay in Adelaide he made his home in Adelaide by then and was settling down. That is why he chose to stay with West Adelaide.

I agree. A lot of clubs use all their picks in the National Draft as they don't see anyone of value for the PSD, yet you can get delisted after the ND, and thus this doesn't allow a club that may be interested any chance of picking you up.
