I think Robert was a better coach than many people give credit for. The majority of the 97/98 flag squad was assembled during his time people forget that.
Agreed- Robert Shaw set up those Premierships
1 - Shaw was there to coach, not recruit. Even if all the recruiting was thanks to Shaw (which it wasn't, see below), good recruiting doesn't make up for poor coaching.
2 - the only new players that played in the premiership team in 1997 brought in after Shaw left were Sampson, James, Keating & Rintoul. So Shaw had most of the premiership players at his disposal and couldn't win more than 8 or so games.
3 - While it's an impressive list of new recruits after Cornes was sacked, you can't credit every one of them to Shaw. Darren Jarman was a whole club effort as was McLeod. John Reid was heavily involved in recruiting from memory and James Fantasia was appointed as recruiting manager in 1995 so would have had a big say in the recruitment of Jarman, Caven, Koster, Goodwin, Ellen and possibly Vardy and Edwards. In fairness, I recall Caven saying Shaw was the man who got him to Adelaide.
4 - Ricciuto, Smart, Bickley, Pittman, Hart, Jameson, Rehn, Robran were all on the list pre-Shaw
Shaw set up the 97-98 premierships? No. The
club from 1991 to 1996 (of which Shaw was a part and contributed in part) set up the 97-98 premierships.
I think Shaw's problem at Adelaide was that he wasn't the right fit at the time and probably he was more suited to being as assistant which he has done very well it seems since then and good on him for that.
