There will be three formal 2010 Father Son nominations for this year's draft, to be announced this afternoon.

Jacob Brennan - Son of Michael Brennan.
Mitch Wallis - Son of Steve Wallis.
Tom Liberatore - Son of Tony Liberatore.

Father - son draft bidding next Tuesday, October 5, with Gold Coast not allowed to bid for the three players, due to their extra picks in the first round for this year.

Wallis will be a first rounder for the Dogs, Liberatore will be a second rounder for them and Brennan a likely late pick.

I am confused as to how this works, how do these players get picked up under father son rule now?

They nominate, and then other clubs can bid one of their own picks that that would use on that player. The team who nominates them initially then has to use the first pick they have after that pick, I think.

Yep, bottom club in the league (West Coast) announces if they wish to take any of the three. if they do, the father-son club must take the player nominated with its next pick in the draft, or he goes to the club that calls his name out.

Ie, if West Coast calls Wallis with their first pick as the bottom club, bulldogs must take him with their first round pick (which is 22 from memory this year).

If West Coast doesn't call any player at one, it then goes to Richmond as second last on the ladder, etc etc etc, all the way through round one, round two and round three.

If a player isn't called by round three, the father-son club is allowed to take him with its last live pick on the day.

Wallis is a jet and a club picking before the Bulldogs will call him at some point, forcing the bulldogs to use their round one pick.
Liberatore is a very solid looking player and the expectation is that he will be called before the Dogs second pick in late round two, forcing the Dogs to use their second round pick.
Brennan is a late maturer who has played in the WAFL this year, so hard to judge where he may go.

Rog is right. Then there is the other set of rules for non-Victorian based clubs.

What if West Coast nominate for Wallis and the Dogs commit their rd 1 pick to him but Adelaide say we are going to use one of our two rd draft picks on jnr libba - do the Dogs lose him or they are able to use their 2nd round pick?

What I'm trying to get at here is that two clubs nomiante their respective rd 1 picks on the two prospective jnr dogs will Footscray lose one of them as they only have one 1st rd pick?

If thats the case what happens to west coast initial pick? if the bulldogs claim him, are the eagles left with no one or an extra pick later on where the talent pool would be leaner ?

The father and son rule should be just that, if a club wants a son of a former player that player should be taken out the draft and picked up with the last pick of that respective club

Quite correct Booney. The AFL represents the best interests of the Vics (VFL) and the SANFL / WAFL comps (pre-AFL) get crapped on. Don't get me started on Bryce Gibbs and the father/son rules. Thankfully, with the next generation of kids coming through, the non-VFL clubs will start to prosper in this most unequitable league.
