Apparently James Hird will coach the Bombers next season!

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,27765165-5018851,00.html

While of course I'm excited at the thought of my favourite player returning to coach us, I do have slight misgivings with champion players trying their hand at coaching. On a hiding to nothing I reckon. Tough to be as good a coach as he was a player. It looks like he'll have an experienced coach to help him out, so hopefully it all goes well. Good on him for taking the risk though! It would have been very easy to just sit back and be remembered as one of our greatest ever players, but he obviously loves the club too much to sit back and watch the slide. :-bd He should definitely be a plus from the marketing point of view anyway, and let's be honest, could he be any worse than Knights? :)

wrong move, i have the feeling this will be michael voss all over again with a good first year and disaster second year or just a complete disaster he won't last three years becoming a senior coach with doing a assisant role with a list that is still five six years away from being a premiership threat and two to three years of being able to complete in finals.

I reckon Dean Laidley or Chris Scott should be given the role.

Honest Hird!!! What a joke.

He did alot of work behind the scenes throughout the year to get rid of Knights, a bit like the Port Magpies Fab 7.

If Robert Walls comments on the radio tonight are true, then he's got an ego way ahead of his own (untried) coaching ability. Walls stated that he wants to "take the best coaches on on match day". He'll get flogged.

You would think the experiment with untried coaches would've started and finished with 1. Look at the situation that Brisbane are in. You could also go and talk to Tim Watson who by his own admission wasn't ready for match days. Times have changed though, and a lot of the match day stuff can be distributed amongst the senior coaches, but I still feel he'll need a hell of a lot more support than bringing in a seasoned coach.

Although, it does smack of Sturt when they got rid of Keane in the late 80's. The board obviously tried to save face and put someone in there dear to the hearts of the club, to win back sponsorship dollars and get the club back on track. For Essendon, they'll make the million bucks up in one foul swoop (the payout for Knights). However, will it be a romantic return, I really doubt it.

Totally agree. Wrong move but as someone else has said won't really matter cos the bombers won't be higher that 12th for the next few years I wouldn't think

Honest Hirdy indeed. Looking back on 'On the couch' episodes this year its sickening to see the 'strength' of his denials of wanting to coach the bombers.

I hope he crashes and burns!

I just can't understand their reasoning here.

Let's get an untried rookie coach - Knights - oh hang on that failed miserbaly.

Answer...

Let's get an untried rookie coach???

Just weird.

The talk last week was that they would also recruit a "Director of Coaching" so as not to repeat the mistakes up in Brisbane.

Mark Williams and Mark Thompson were the two names mentioned.

Wont that be funny.

Bomber and Gaz leave the Cattery. Especially after Bombers apparent dislike of how Gaz has conducted himself.

I thought James Hird was smarter than this. Essendon are and will remain a rabble for many years. Hirdy stirred the pot and back doored Knighter then posed his way through numerous painful interviews, particulary on the 'On the Couch' show which showed him to be anything but honest Jim.

Essendon fans rubbing their hands together over Hirdy and Bomber or Choco are making me smile. Bomber's gameplan has been superceeded this year and when was the last time Choco was cutting edge.

Hirdy should have waited a few years until he had a few more draft picks to work with and then come riding to the rescue. Instead he'll go down as the next Tim Watson. Good luck with that.

regards,

REB
