Just wondering....

Postby sapaul » Tue Sep 14, 2010 3:21 pm

Reading the 'Which club can you just not stand' thread on the main AFL board got me thinking (mainly after some stupid comments about Adelaide supporters  ) if anyone 'ditched' a VFL team back in 1990?

Did you follow anyone in the VFL prior to 1990?

If so, who etc?

My husband followed Richmond.

I had a 'soft spot' for Geelong.

A very interesting topic actually sapaul!

I was only 10 in 1990 and it was only around then that my younger brothers started to play football and we started to watch it on tv. So I haven't really known footy without the Crows.

I was only 4 at the time of the crows first season but my old man used to follow the hawks. Pretty sure i got given his old hawthorn jumper at one stage but i can only ever remember going for the crows.

Yep, Collingwood ... Still have a soft spot for them, but thought Id see more Norwood boys in AFL action (reason I started following Collingwood too) by following the local team.

Probably also explains why Im not a diehard supporter because Norwood are really the only team Ive always loved.

I was 13 when the Crows joined and before that I was a Geelong supporter (well sort of) before the crows were in I really was into the SANFL more so I really only went for Geelong because of my old man and all of our family started in Geelong.

I was a Carlton supporter - 21 at the time.

I followed them because they were like a South Australian/ West Australian composite team - who needs a salary cap - and the Kernahan boys were there, etc.

I met up with a past flame about 2 years ago and she could not believe tha I no longer followed Carlton but got on the Crows Bandwagon back in 1991 because I was such a vocal supporter back then.

Yep, I've copped criticism from mates for changing allegiances, but as I keep saying, SANFL ruled back then and everything was Glenelg and that will NEVER change. I followed Carlton as a VFL team just because I could. It wasn't like it is now, back then you basically had an hour of highlights on The Winners with Drew Morphett on a Sunday Night, so a bit hard to be "dyed in the wool".

I had a soft spot for Geelong but was mostly a passive supporter of VFL games. My grandmother's late brother lived in the Geelong area.

I usually just picked the underdog when I watched VFL games.

The Crows had a connection for me right from the start and finally felt like my team.

I had a very slight interest in Hawthorn as a kid, but only because other kids around me had a nominated Victorian side they allegedly barracked for.
I chose one to keep them off my back about not really being all that interested in the VFL.

I was 5 so didn't even know the VFL.

Naturally you follow the old man, who was a MASSIVE Norwood supporter living only around the corner.

So i just followed Norwood, then of course the Crows.

But i have always had a soft spot for Carlton.

I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

I did develop some tolerance for Collingwood when they had about 6 former Norwood players in their squad several years ago.
