Port Adelaide Pre-Season 2011

Postby hearts on fire » Wed Aug 11, 2010 6:16 pm

What needs to be done at the Power during the pre-season and into the 2011 season?

I think we need a forward, decent forward that can really help us kick a big score, we haven't had a real dominant forward since Tredrea was in his prime.

and whos gonna get the coaching job? can't see anyone else getting it other than Matty Primus.

Who ever is coaching needs to be aggressive at trade week!!

I think a lot of clubs will take a leaf out of Geelong's book. I believe it was the 17th January they officially started pre-season training. They have huge bodies, very strong. I think we could benefit by beefing the boys up a few kilos. We could also do with a real another speedster who can get a lot of clearances &/or kick running goals, ie another Rodan, Cyril Rioli, Byron Pickett kind of player.

Key forward, couldn't agree more with you. Schulz & Westoff may work with one of them having a good day, but if they are both off, the forward line is ordinary. They both just have to take it by the balls and be consistent. I think Daniel Stewart might turn into a pretty good 60-70 goals a year player but that is probably a year or two away yet. Our season this year has really shown how we miss that key forward, 5 wins out of 7 before Tredders got injured.......

By the sounds of it there will be some experienced players moving around this year, maybe a J Brown or B Fevola might be available - who knows? If we could get someone like that with a plan for maybe 2 years whilst we groom Stewart & Butcher when he gets going (he is like the forgotten sleeping giant, he could be anything).

I hope like hell they go with Primus. He is everything Choco wasn't in the past season or two. No favourites, no easy passes into the team, you play like sh*t you get dropped, he is footy smart, he's tactful & articulate in the media. None of the other touted candidates do it for me, always thought Cameron was a soft, outside receiver, Richardson never scaled great heights as a player and yet had every opportunity to. Sanderson....had his chance, shat on the club before, Hinkley was soft.

Would also think maybe a bit of a clean out with the assistants? I was always an Adam Kingsley fan (he was a clever player) & I think he's probably going OK, not sure whether Cripps is the man for the forward role though - would love to see Tredders take it on (instant respect from the players), then elevate Buddha to midfield/ruck coach. I think I read in the 'Tiser this week it was rumoured Cripps was heading back to Melbourne anyway - it might work out well.

Lastly, we need someone to get into Troy Chaplin's head to kick long and create a quick play rather than going short as much as he does. He reminds me a bit of Roger Delaney the way he plays, can spoil a contest, can take a strong pack mark, reads the ball very well and tidies up. Difference is.........Roger USED his booming left foot to open up big spaces well beyond the 50, especially to his partner in crime George Fiacchi - Georgey had done a bolt down the other flank as soon as he saw Roger was a chance to get it. Chaplin tries to thread the needle just a little bit too much inside the defensive 50.
