Interesting article in the Advertiser today about VB being all but locked in as the next captain of the AFC:
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/fut ... 5866664925Thought I would open it up as a topic to see what people thought?
Even if Goodwin plays on next year, I think it would be a good move to pass the captaincy onto someone at the end of this season.
I think Van Berlo would be a very good choice for captain personally, I would be more than happy for him to have the gig.

I think VB is the only one IMO ready to step up...
Maybe we need a 5-4-3-2-1 voting system on this topic to try gauge any other possibilities ??

Just added a poll with 1 vote per poster at this stage. Just listed names that have been talked about as future captains in the past, let me know if I've missed someone obvious and I'll add them to the list.

Bock would have been a candidate if it wasnt for the off-field stuff. Rutten an option too.
Im not 100% at ease with VB. No questioning his courage and determination but is he captain material ? Thompson maybe another one who could do it. He has a presence on the field, something which VB lacks, IMO.
Give it 2 years and maybe Dangerfield is the man.
What about we swap VB for Pavlich, a few problems solved in one hit...

Out of Vince and van Berlo for mine.
Bock doesn't appear a leader from my vantage point, Rutten would be a reluctant leader as I think he appears uneasy in front of a camera although so was Cassisi a year or so ago and there is no way Thompson should get the gig, he has been awful of late.
Vince would be my guess. What about Porplyzia?

I personally like Truck as a captain! With the way the leadership groups are structured these days, there isnt 1 captain on game day or at training anymore, the whole group has a say. The captain also has to be good in the media and will be able to promote the club with a good image. I think down the track Dangerfield could also take up a leadership role with a number of people saying he already has great leadership qualities at such a young age.

Maybe Thompson to stop him from going to GC17.
But Vince would be my guess.

Depends when they're looking to appoint one.
If he can re-establish his game and consistency to the level of 2009 then I'd suggest Vince, but if not, then I'd probably appoint someone like Bock for say 3 years, allowing enough time for the next skipper to emerge.
Agree that Van Berlo appears to have the right attributes to be a leader, but Im not sold on him as a footballer yet and I think you need to be pretty certain that your captain would be one of the first picked every week.

Agree 100% with you CP on Van Berlo.
I think Bock is, when fully fit and firing, Adelaide's best player. A pretty important attribute when selecting a new skipper. Off field things are going to prevent him ever captaining the footy side though i think.

Van Berlo was pretty good on the weekend. I think people underestimate his ability at times. He's a bit of an 'Edwards' type, he doesn't do the flashy stuff but is a solid contributor every week.
His recent injury battles have lessened that contribution a bit this year so far, but he's not alone there.

Wouldn't be so certain about his off field indiscretions....Goodwin had the gambling fine!
Knights has also stepped up around the club with a few leadership and mentoring roles this year, could be in the mix

Im a VB fan, love his work ethic and courage. He is the type of player that looks like he is going to get seriously hurt one day, due to his gutsy style. I can recall a discussion on here a year or 2 back when REB said that he would take Danyle Pearce over VB anyday. Pearce always looks like he will injure himself too - by tripping over the 4th row of seats at AAMI stadium, because that's where he spends game days. Im surprised he hasnt grabbed a hotdog from some supporters hands, rather than the footy at times.
Anyway, back on topic...
I think VB is an important part of the side, but im not sold on him as captain. Although, i didnt think Cassisi would make a good captain either and he is/has. Maybe he needs that responsibility to take the next step as a footballer.

These days the captain isn't always the obvious best player. Nick Maxwell and Harley come to mind as great captains but probably just in the top 5 best players in their teams.
I think VB is an automatic selection these days and he is under-rated a bit. He's not our best player but I think he's (c) material. Can't see Porps or Bock doing it. I think Rutten would be the other top candidate.

True, but being violent towards a woman is different than gambling.

Agreed with Maric. Need a bit of fire in the leadership group.

i have heard from a good source that maric is a sensational leader not only on field but also out of footy to the young up and coming lads always giving advice and helping out were he can with any problems.
should definatly be in the leadership group but couldnt have him as a captain as his ability is limited and wouldnt be a walk up start week in week out
