Coaching moves

Postby Booney » Mon Jun 29, 2009 5:31 pm

I was talking to a mate about this topic the other day ,relating it to Mark Williams.

The PAFC board meet to decide Mark Williams’ fate, yet if they decide to go in another direction and appoint a new coach, how do they know what is out there? Who is available? No one in their right mind would begin to talk to a club until the potential new coach actually knew there was a job there. ie: Would Damien Hardwick have spoken to the PAFC board a month ago? Of course not.

On the other side of the coin how can a coach, like Williams decide if he wishes to move on his own accord? There is no way he could have spoken to Richmond, Collingwood or North Melbourne in the last few weeks.

So, from my point of view, should there be a mid season period where coaches with full anonymity can speak to other clubs about the potential for them to coach there?

I understand the anonymity aspect would be rather difficult to control but in the Port Adelaide instance, the club is really only choosing do they want Williams or someone else and who is out there anyway, they have no opportunites to interview other candidates until after they let Williams go and for Williams he has no opportunity to speak to another club to decide if he is ready to move voluntarily.

One of the very few positions where the employer and employee are working on very limited options.
PAFC. Forever.

Booney, this is obviously why Choco wanted that June 30 clause in his contract but you're right, it's almost chicken and egg stuff.

Maybe we need a coaches draft? #-o

But seriously, it's a game of cat and mouse and that's why those agents get the big bucks ... apparently.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

You're kidding aren't ya Booney?
Heaps of clubs and coaches and prospective coaches all are continuously speaking to each other at the very least through agents and moreso than normal in the last month or two.
Mark Williams would know exactly where he stands in regards to getting another gig and how much he'd get paid.

I had 2 sighs Wedgie...

1/ Good news that he will stuff the club right up now
2/ The chance of him going to the Roos has changed from 0.1% to zero!

Yeah, why would you want a premiership coach at your club?

Hawks - I'll grant you was a genuine flop on Port's behalf.

Collingwood - Played in two GF's in a row.

Sydney - Built to two consecutive GF's and several consecutive finals series some 4 years later.

Using that philosophy they'd pay four times as much to Tom Hafey to coach the Power.

The players are comfotable under Williams, he plays favs and has coaching philosophies that are years behind 2009.

I can't see him lasting the 2 years but really hope he does. Thank you to the Power board and a bigger thank you to the people that took weeks to put together a report that recommended nothing. Its hard to imagine with reports that take weeks recommending nothing, sponsoring netball teams and installing video games in the changeroom how this club is losing money and going nowhere on the field.

Happy with the appointment? I would answer that by saying I think the time is right for a change.

I believe Williams has the skills to bring a new group through ( which he has done over the last 3 years ) and lead us towards September action once more, but, having said that there is a real ground swell of support for the younger generation of coaches who are only just out of the game ( or recently ) Voss, Worsfold, Ratten and co.

I would not have been upset if we had looked elsewhere.
