Crow one game wonders.....

Postby Brad » Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:41 pm

I thought a thread neeed to be devoted to those crows players who have been and gone in a blink of an eyelid, I'll start the ball rolling:

Adam Saliba - Played a blinder in 92 from memory and due to lack of interest never went on with it.

Josh Mail - Showed sign in about 94 before getting the sack for not rocking up in time for Robert Shaw's inital meeting with the players.

Shane Tongerie - PLayed well against the Bears in a game in 94 and hardly ever sighted after.

Im sure there are many, many more...

Why Tom Warhurst only played 2 games will remain a mystery.

Lance Picioane, who played 4 games, was one of a few players who played a handful of games here but more with other clubs.

Clayton Lamb was one who comes to mind as playing only the one game, for one goal.

I recall that he had a serious knee injury after his second game? Quite a few older SANFL players made the Crows 1st 52 but then were cut after just one year. I always felt they were overly focussed on "rewarding" long term SANFL servants to the detriment of stock-piling all the best young talent at the time. Possibly because of the trade moritorium in place for the following year. That second year's exclusive draft netted Ricciuto and Modra among others. Again, however, not enough of those 8 went on with it which was symptomatic of the Crows' drafting right throught the 90s.

Adam Saliba was such a shame. I went to school with him and can vouch that he was a freak. I think he got distracted by off-field issues and couldn't commit himself to the work required to be an AFL player. He even played a SOO game v Victoria and did quite well.

Reckon it was around the time he suffered a nasty blood clot which effectively ended his Norwood career also ... Tried to get back a few times, but age and extent of the injury/illness caught up with him I think.

Was a quiz question on AA tonight about one of the Crows first draft picks (in a given year) I can't remember, and who never played a game with them.

Did VERY well, was the name on many punters lips for a while afterward ... You don't impress in a state game against the Big V unless you have the ability to make it imho.

He went on to continue playing in the amateurs with Old Ignations and won their div's medal one year -despite only being able to run in straight lines because of his knee!
Also coached there for a while as well.

A real tragedy I reckon that the national comp didn't get see more of a quality player.
I think from memory he was dropped after the round 2 Carlton game where Kernahan got the better of him.
Then the knee injury came in a Norwood game.

The footy world is wondering what the point was of Bock's "one game exile" :)

No worries, thanks for correcting me on that one mate, I sorta lost touch with what was going on at Norwood in the early 90's ... Tommy was a definite favourite though.

Very clever AH.

I reckon you have to include Romano Negri in this list. He tore the Hawks up in game 1 (as did many others), then played a few games after that in 91 for not much.

Is he still on the Saints list? did he even play a game with the Saints?

I remember this distinctly! He said in the media at the time that he'd struggled before on Kernahan (and the game upcoming was against Carlton). He either played that game v Carlton and got beaten or he got dropped and either played one more game or never played again at that level.

The only thing Fergus did was kick 9 against North in a final for the Eagles.

Well he polled two Brownlow votes in a win against Sydney on the SCG, so that must have been an OK game.
