THE AFL will permanently introduce a rule trialled during the pre-season outlawing deliberately rushed behinds.

It was one of two trial rules which will come into effect for the Toyota AFL Premiership season.

The other was to award a 50m penalty against players who tackle, hold or make high contact against opponents after they have disposed of the ball.

I heard on 5AA that all 16 club coaches and captains agreed with the rushed behinds rule. Less than 50% on the other one.

I am not sure how they swayed Paul Roos as he's been very vocal about it.

The Rules Committee is like the Hall of Fame. Have to bring in new ones every year, whether they need to or not.

will this just be AFL or all leagues?

Not sure about the 50m for dumping a player after disposal, say he has just delivered the ball to someone with space on the wing Im not sure teh team would want the whistle to blow, play stop and get 50m advantage as it gives a chance for the team to zone up

This rule has been rushed in but they might have missed the point.

Nothing wrong with the game before they began to screw with it. Now they need to come up with new rules to negate　the flaws created by their old　new rules.
Just put it back the way it was dickheads!

All they had to do to changer the current rushed behind situation was to go back to the old style of making the team wait until the flags had been waved before they could take the kick out.

The AFL want the game speed up and less physical yet can't handle the consequences that this will bring al la
- interchange rules
- rolling flood
- the rushed behinds.

Rubbish. There has been a clear trend for increased rushed behinds during the home and away season.

It's a good change and brings consistency to the act of deliberately taking the ball over ANY part of boundary.
Rushing behinds is a weak cop out and an embarassment to the game.

People also say they don't like the faster kick out rule where players don't have to wait for the goal umpire to wave the flags.
Stiff. Waiting for the flags was annoying for players and then spectators when they had to take the ball back.

Most of the frustration of the modern game are due to coaching tactics, not rule changes.
Wish people would remember that instead of whingeing about minor rule changes.

I agree with you in part mate, but then also disagree in part ... Yes the coaches have a fair bearing on the frustration, but the game evolves quickly, meaning coaches will always eventually counteract the current style, why do they need rule changes to try and address it in some cases?

I don't like the change of rule for the rushed behind, but to be fair I haven't seen much NAB Cup so don't have a fixed idea on it yet, will reserve judgement.

I also haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't like the umps flags/kick in rule change, pretty sure you'll find most are happy about that one.

I don't think there were too many test cases in the NAB Cup for the new rule, but an ump did get one wrong when he penalised a Richmond player for a miscued handball that went through. The ump was unsighted and guessed, which shouldn't happen of course.

Yep, for me the change in flag rule promoted the rushed behind...

Every year I get less and less interested in the AFL. I'll still watch Carlton games, but where I used to watch all 8 games in a weekend, now I just can't be bothered. This just adds to the temptation of watching one game a weekend - that way I hopefully wont get too frustrated at these infuriating rule changes.

But it did need changing, otherwise what's the point of having a rules committee?
