No Bumping

OK ... Well I know Rowey can be a bit of a dill (to borrow his own terminology), but I thought he made a very interesting point on the radio this morning.
With Choco's admission that he has banned the Bump among his playing group, preferring them to sweat off on an opponent and then tackle once he has taken possession (which is BS that the game has gotten to this stage IMHO, but I digress) .. Rowey revealed that it's about 7 club coaches who have now instructed their squad to adopt this philosophy!!
HOWEVER ... The real interesting point he made, is that the Bump has become virtually outlawed in AFL footy, yet the earliest monitored teaching of our kids is Auskick, which allows bumping but no tackling ... Am I looking at things the wrong way, or is that a ridiculous mixed message to send future footballers and parents??

I agree 100 per cent.
I've seen kids in under 12s absolutely ironed out by a legal bump is a game where tackling is outlawed.
With the new outlook on bumps and clubs discouraging them at AFL level, it might be a good thing for country footy and even at SANFL level if they can retain the tough aspect of the game as the AFL gets a tad softer each year.

I agree wholeheartedly with your point mate, it's just a pity that the SANFL appear hellbent on becoming AFL-SA, meaning the changes to the game will eventually filter down to all levels

From my point of view, I love seeing a good legal hit.
Who can forget Mark Riccuito on Dean Kemp?

How can we outlaw these aspects from our game?

I dont have any problem with his bump on Kemp being too high and awarded a Free Kick, but his bump (later in that compilation) on Embley is a great example of it's place in the game.

Yeah who can forget it.!
The Kemp hit was certainly not legal. I have no problem outlawing bumps like that, particularly when you see what sort of affect it has on the careers of players.
Dean Kemp was never the same after that.

Surely what the kids are doing at AusKick is nothing like the bumps the AFL is banning? Aren't they the sort of safe bumps the AFL has allowed for in the new rule?
I think the idea is that bumping at that level is safer than tackling. Harmless little kid style bumping that is, not 1980s style shirt fronts
They learn tackling later. I assume there's some logic in the way the kids are prepared for a contact sport.
I think Rowey's being mischevous, he heard that from a caller (or an interview) a few weeks ago.

Hear what you're saying mate, and agree that the damage at Auskick level is nothing like AFL level, but surely it's still hypocritical? The no bumping game is exactly what the AFL brainstrust want, regardless of how they try to dress it up.

Amazing to think that something that has been fine in our game for so many years has recently become such a massive grey area that it may disappear. Takes another small step toward clubs just looking more at pure athletes, for their ability to run with the ball, rather than more physical players. No question there are doubtful bumps. No question there are bad or illegal bumps. There are also plenty of pure physical bumps each year that are pure, honest contests and it's very disappointing to think this part of the game may be changed to such an extent. A player like Port's Luke Saunders - one of the more genuine makers of a contest I've seen at SANFL for a while - could be nervous at this, which is a huge shame, as players of his ilk are scrupulously fair, just prepared to make an honest contest to win the ball.

Choco is either over reacting or pulling the piss out of the rule.

Not really, there's just too much risk at stake for a bump that accidentally hit's someone high ... He's not the only coach to instruct his players this way apparently

There was no bumping allowed in Auskick when my kids did it, in fact the kids were penalised if they did bump.
Bumping isnt allowed in school footy till they're playing Year 4/5s.

Just looking through the rules/policy for Auskick, it appears the Bumping doesn't begin until the kids are 9/10 years old, although from what I can make out, thats the age they first start playing games rather than just running through drills.
TBH, for all my gripes, the Auskick policies look a fantastic way of managing the kids and introducing them to footy.

They played games at our Auskick and kids were mainly around the 5yo mark.
There were no kids older than 8 there as school footy has kicked in by then.

Ok, well Im not sure how that fits in with the Auskick statement I just read, but good for the kids ... Can always remember as a little tacker at school almost counting down the days till I qualified for competitive footy.

Is tackling safe? Pinning somebody's arms to their body and throwing them to the ground. What a joke. AFL is going the right way about becoming a dinosaur.
