Geelong 'Cats' - WTF!?!

Every AFL fixture, The NAB Cup guide (and I assume every other official AFL publication)
is referring to Geelong as the 'Geelong Cats'.
Not Geelong, the 'Geelong Cats'.
REB,Wedgie, (and others) do you know WTF is going on with this hideous Americanisation of your great club?

The point he is trying to make is, their name is "Geelong". Cats are their logo, a sobriquet as it were ... a marketing tool. They are the Geelong Football Club, not the Geelong Cats Football Club. They should be referred to as either Geelong, or the Cats.

The only team who is registered in this light is the Brisbane Lions.

Must admit its the first Ive heard of it, Im still annoyed that for the 2nd year in a row all their Members stickers and publications are pushing the "Footy Full On" saying, WTF has that got do with Geelong?
Only thing I can think of is they're trying to associate the club more with all supporters and not just the Geelong one as Geelong truly are the team for all fans world wide to love. ;)

They must have asked the AFL to use "Geelong Cats", because the other old VFL teams aren't listed with their nick-name.

I agree with Dutchy though it's not "Americanisation" to do something that 6 AFL teams have been doing since their inception.

Their web-site has a strong emphasis on "Cats" so I assume it's a club marketing initiative. Not sure why it's such as issue :?

If they could learn to beat the Hawks they could call themselves the Fluffy cute Kittens for all I care. Just wouldn't mind seeing them play. This staggered start to the NAB is horse5hit.

REB

Don't most people refer to the Adelaide Football club as the Adelaide Crows ?
I don't see a problem with it.

I think the point is that the official name of the footy club is the Geelong Football Club, 'Cats' is simply the nickname. In the same way Sturt is called the Sturt Football Club, not the Sturt Double Blues Football Club.

Insert Port Adelaide / Port Power argument here.
