AAMI has a makeover

What does everyone think?

Are they going to knock down the corporate boxes at the southern end? They're gone in the model.
Are they going to build 3 tiers in the members stand? Again, there's clearly 3 levels in the model.
Are they going to knock a huge hole in the north western part of the stadium where the 'new' northern stand joins to the members stadium? - Model.

What's the new capacity going to be? Only states that 10-15k supporters will be closer to the play - who cares?

Seems like a lot of money tied up that could be better spent on an inner-city, multi purpose stadium in the mould of the Telstra DOOM (one that actually allows grass to grow).

Just my useless 2p.

The inner-city stadium was always a huge stretch, at best. But since the credit crunch it's become a complete fantasy. You may as well post that we should have a stadium in outer space.

You know it's a dead duck when even Martin Hamilton-Smith backs away from it, as he has recently. He was using it to gain political momentum and it was working, nothing like an issue regarding Sport to stir up the masses. There's no money anywhere for hugely expensive luxury infrastructure like that.

So, IMO get behind AAMI Stadium! Facelift, seating improvement, better lighting, better transport to the ground ... all owned by our own SANFL. Something to be proud of.

No more Footy Park Bashing!

Sorry mate, I'm not Footy Park bashing. I actually think Footy Park is a fantastic place to watch footy (except when Port's getting pumped or throwing away 12 goal leads).

Just looking at it from a state development perspective. $100m spent on footy park in a development that doesn't look like significantly increasing capacity, versus say $400-$500m spent on a new multi purpose ground in the city?

I'm just thinking Football World Cup 2018/2022, Rugby World Cup (will be back in the not too distant future), cricket...etc...etc.

I understand that things are tight for that kind of spending, but IMO it makes sense to postponse this $100m and put it towards a big development in the city down the track. And on the credit crunch thing, the great depression and related inpacts lasted for around 2.5 years at worst (debatable that it even lasted that long). Most downturns last 18 months. We're about 15 months from the top. This downturn is bad, but I'd be surprised if there isn't the beginnings of a recovery by the end of 2009. So some creative foreplanning and it's not such a fantasy.

In terms of Footy Park bashing, I was talking to the wider SA Sporting community rather than you .. and the inevitable posters that will respond to this thread telling us that it's a "hole".

Cricket already has a home, soccer has a stadium that rarely sells out, rugby is hardly played here ... If you want to get the soccer world cup then redevelop Hindmarsh Stadium or AAMI for the handful of games we'd have here.

Anyway, the cost is more like 2-3 times the figure you quoted. When Perth's new stadium was proposed the estimate ranged from $821m to $1.147b depending on where it was built. None of the options were "inner city". You could safely add another 20% to those cost estimates for inner city Adelaide, built in 5 years time. Homebush Stadium cost $690m when it was built 10 years ago.

Their ground also had the inevitable problems of trying to cater for both Aust Rules and Soccer or Rugby (needing different size playing surface).

The new liberal Govt has now backed away from these ambitous plans and will redevelop Subiaco Oval instead.

It won't happen in our lifetimes.

The calls for an expensive inner city stadium always intrigue me.
Does anyone have any figures on what percentage of the Adelaide population actually attend SANFL matches, or may attend anything else at such a stadium?
Would it be sufficient to warrant government assistance with funding which would presumably be needed?

You can forget a Stadium for $400-$500 Mill in teh city - will be lucky to build a 10 000 seater.

Any decent stadium now will cost $1 Billion. No coincidence that teh planned city stadium in perth ahs been canned. Look at the over expenditure that occured on the new Wembley.

A multi-purpose stadium in Adelaide city is a pipe-deam.

DA why should we build a multipurpiose stadium for the World Cup? We won't get it put your hard earned on Japan to get the Asias nomination to bid for teh World Cup.

Also, an oval stdium is OK for the recent World Club Challenge and the 2002 World Cup final in Japan. So why not play games at a revamped Footy park?
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
