I don't want to sully the RIP thread so I've started another on the best commentators.
Whilst Clinton was good but IMO he ranked a long way behind the best commentator I've ever heard Peter "Smooth" Booth on 3LO (ABC Melbourne) in the 80s and 90s.
Never hyped the game up, called it accurately, you knew where the ball was and who had it
Tim Lane is next best (overall career wise) but Jarrod Whately ABC Victoria was the best caller in 2007 (Tim has slipped from when he was full time at teh ABC in the 80s and 90s.
I also rate Ian Daysie Day highly too from the SANFL days and I believe would cut it with todays young Punks.

One of my favourites of all time was Jim Deane on ABC radio, a great special comments man.
I know Dwayne Russell isn't popular with a lot of people but hes probably one of my current favourites.

Would be my current fave also ... And Ian Day as mentioned. Oversaw a golden age of SANFL footy and was the commentator I grew up listening to every weekend.

i agree Jarrod Whately is one of the best, was suprised when 10 axed him a few years ago. Clinton was my fav NON SA commentator, you could watch any game he called and really enjoyed it, he will be missed.
Apparantly Clinton was to call the Sat arvo games from this year, so they will have to now fill a HUGE hole with their coverage, will be interesting who they go for!

Tim Lane for me. The 3AW crew were pretty good, don't mind Rexy and they crap on a bit but they heed to fill a VIP now
Can't stand listening to any of the callers from AA except maybe Wildy...

It is actually Gerard Whately.

Tim Lane - but I'm dreaming that someone will sit down with Simon Hill and teach him all about Aussie Rules.
Overall 3AW is streets ahead of 5AA. If I cant get a 3AW call I head straight for the ABC.
Not sure what it is about Perth but their radio commentators always seem a 'bit different' - anyone else struggle to listen to a game in Perth?

Grybas was an OK caller but an astute observer on the game and thus probably a better presenter than commentator overall.
My favourite SANFL commentator was Bruce McAvaney (showing my age a bit here). Before he turned into a the babbling goose he has become today, McAvaney was an outstanding caller of SANFL football on The Big Replay (this is the day for heroes). Going back a while I know.
I also liked, I think it was Daysie, the comments such as 'Ducked the chutney' and 'Stacks on the Mill' ha ha. Nice work.
For the AFL I liked Ian Robertson but not when Carlton were playing. Commetti was good in his early days but to self aware at the present.
To be frank, it is easier to single out the ordinary ones instead of finding the good ones. Overall in radio, ANY station is preferable to 5aa. If you don't follow the Power or the Crows then the bias is excruitiating. (Yeah I am aware of the target audience but at least pretend to be professional FFS).

REB

Today's the Day for Heroes (for giving the best that you can, for winning and losing and saying "Good On Ya" - IT'S ALL IN THE GAME) ... Yeah okay, so I got carried away ... As Daysie would say, "Oh what a soda!"

I like listening to David Wildy, but i am put off by the other clowns on 5AA.
I actually dont mind Eddie Mcguire as a commentator - not saying he is the best, but not the worst by a long way.
Tim Lane is very good.

Tim Lane
would be good if he could better disguise his thinly veiled bias toward Victorian clubs and Carlton in particular. While he is at he can get rid of the massive chip he has on his shoulder about Non-Victorian clubs.
Whately could follow suit. His commentary of last years Eagles vs Bombers clash was disgraceful. I thought I was listening to some commercial parochial rubbish not the national broadcaster. Also his lack of research beggars belief.
Mind you he seems to be endemic of a problem not just on 774 sport but 774 in general, which has come about in the last couple of years. This is where people who have on air positions in no way deserve or have earnt them but 774 is currently so bereft of talent they get the spot anyway. I'm just amazed that 774 don't have the "wannabe idler champions" calling the football. They seem to be doing everything else on the station.

Agreed Rebster, the combo of Day, Marker and Oatey was golden... (Daysie had a patent on "Butters Up again"!)
Mr Footypunt was pretty good value when a boundary rider too....

AFL - TV - Michael Williamson, Channel 7 late 60's early 70's.
Dick Mason ABC same time period.
Radio - Ian Major 3KZ, Rex Hunt and Tim Lane(TV as well)
SANFL - Only heard Ian Day & Peter Marker in early/mid 80's but they were good enough for me.
