So, heading into Round 9, we are looking at the following changes:
In: Broadbent, Clurey, Stewart
Out: Cornes (retired), Ryder (Achilles), Trengove (ankle)
Definitely happy to see Broady back in the side, especially as it was announced he has signed on til 2019. I've been holding my breath hoping to see Colquhoun get selected, but alas another week will go by without him in the side. With Trengove injured, it would be no surprise to most that we will get to see Tom Clurey have a crack. Noted that he has been named in the interchange and was not slotted straight into center half back. I find this curious simply because I've heard (although haven't seen it for myself), word is that he's been playing in the midfield the past few weeks for the Maggies, and shutdown arguably the 2 best SANFL mids: Magarey Medallist Zane Kirkwood(Sturt) and Jack Oatey Medallist Matthew Panos(Norwood). Makes me wonder if he has he come into the side to replace Trengove, or Kane Cornes?? It will definitely be interesting to see the role they end up giving him.
Any thoughts as to who could step up to fill Cornes' shoes?
I think you're on the money regarding Clurey coming in for Cornes. Essentially it would be a straight swap, with Jonas taking Melbourne's second or third tall.
However, I am disappointed to see Pittard still there. When he's taking the game on and it's working for him, he looks like a Cadillac, but when it doesn't pay off, he looks like a Datsun 180Y. He only performed like the former in Rounds 1, 2 and possibly 3. Moore or Young would be more than adeqaute replacements for him.
I am glad to see Amon get a full game as, like the unfortunately injured Ah Chee, there is much to like about him.
Having Ryder out for 1-2 weeks places more pressure on Lobbe, as if he needs it in the first place. Although Lobbe's form of late has been borderline shithouse, you'd still back him in to dominate Spencer in the ruck. Maybe this is the time to get his mojo back?
I feel that a week off will rejuvenate Broadbent, and that the club planned to rest him during the SANFL bye week. Hell knows, we need him firing.
Welcome aboard, True North- Great to see another pear fan amongst the boards!
I like the selection of Clurey. Obviously a replacement for Trengove, but with Hogan and Pedersen the only true "talls" in the MFC forward line, I would expect Bob to have first crack at Hogan, Hombsch to Pedersen and Clurey to Watts. I wouldn't be suprised however, to see Clurey push up the ground a lot of the day to provide extra numbers around the stoppage as the "blocker". As I mentioned in my review, we have been very poor with our disposal efficiency from stoppages, as the likes of Boak, Gray and Ebert simply are not allowed free run at it. This will be a ploy that Melbourne will target this weekend and we simply have to have measures in place to counteract it.
As weird as this sounds, Ryder out is a blessing. We inject a utility in Stewart into the side who is an extra midfield rotation, which will hopefully alleviate the stress on our core midfielders, and our ailing fitness. It will hopefully see Westhoff return to normal, and Lobbe will hopefully return to form, knowing he is rucking all but 5% of the match.
Need quality ball users to get the footy inside 50 quick. Pittard, Broadbent, Amon all must fire. We simply must lift disposal efficiency going inside 50, as we are likely to encounter a sometimes 15-20 man forward line. Hawthorn are so good at hitting up short passes until a defensive error is made and a forward target opens up. An area we were pathetic in on Sunday night against the Tigers. God forbid I hope it improves on Saturday.
Ripping news re. Brogsy, signing on until 2019. Now bring back your form, son!
