Yes, that's one reason I played Hockey instead of football, making the choice myself at 13.
I had no problem with the impacts and risks in going in hard for the ball, but copping a deliberate elbow in the face or a deliberate knee in the kidney was not on my list of acceptable risks. I'm happy to see the emphasis being on skill and determination rather than on being a bruiser like Neil Kerley, whom I saw play many times..

The rules committee are similar to channel 7 and fox footy etc.
they feel like they have to make changes every year wether they need them or not.

Just saw the Dangerfield slide rule decision!!!!

Wow what a joke!!!

You have a big ruckmen standing upright in no position to win the footy at most he was gonna try and push the opponent of the ball.

Dangerfield went in his eyes never left the footy he keeps it going forward (as we were all taught to do) and gets out into clear space with a teammate right next to him ready to take the handball.

If that's the rule I don't care what anyone says that's rubbish and against the spirit of the game.

Mark Robinson has posed the question would LeCras have broken his arm had he been allowed to go in sliding has players had in previous years.

Yeah it's a stupid rule but the decisions were correct. IMO it should be weeks if a player goes in FEET first. And only a free kick if the player makes contact with the opponent before touching the ball.

Agree feet first like a soccer slide tackle like what goodes was doing need to be outlawed, similar to billy slater using the slide to try and prevent tries in the nrl

seeing that your more then likely a seagull that sits behind the pack and waits for the ball in his lap probably finds it hard to see the difference of using your feet to protect you over standing up like a real player and taking a bump. if you really love sliding that much why don't you go and play soccer.

Kickinit does resort to personal attacks, but at the moment is attacking one of my nemeses on the SAAFL board. So play on.

what because davey said he flopped the rule has a floor? doesn't that go for every rule the afl has? do you really want to see players take the soft option and slide into the footy. I don't know if you know but this isn't a new rule it has been rule the afl are now just getting stricter on it. there's no need for a player to slide in and get the ball, no one has ever been taught and no one will ever be taught it. football is becoming too soft and the more hits we have the better.

I love how you carry on about it not being taught!

WHO CARES players do a trillion things a game that their not 'taught'.

Look away handballs, Torpedos, full length diving smothers, backing into packs, taking screamers on a players head, soccering the ball etc etc should we ban them as there not a taught skill.

Most ridiculous point to back up an argument I have ever read in SAFooty history

The point is its another grey area in our game where umpires are only going to make the right decision on a 50/50 basis.

It also rewards players who in alot of situations are not in a position to win the ball anyway ala the Dangerfield/Ryder decision.

We now have another rule which gives players the oppurtunities to stage/flop/fall for free kicks.......................to me that is SOFT

we don't have another rule it has been a rule for a while, it's only now that they are cracking down on it.

I was taught to handball to a team mate, torps, smoothers, courage even if it meant backing into packs, screamers and soccering the ball. I was also taught to keep my feet nether back out of a contest and to always hit the footy hard.

why do you want to see a player slide to either to either cause a stoppage or to take another players feet out? For me it's a positive step for the afl to be cracking down on a rule that they already have.

Love the new rule, as the commentators pointed out last night it forces players to do what someone like Gary Ablett does and stay on your feet more often than not.
