He made some valid points, I seen Carlton lose 1 game by 4 points and the next by 7 points and couldn't muster a vote. I find it hard to believe that you can win by such small margins and have all 3 best players, it happened a fair bit last night, more so to Carlton.

Great stuff GAJ, I don't think there could be a more deserving winner.

Some not so happy moments from the evening:

- The umpires again looked after their love child Goodes with at least 4 votes I don't think he should have received.
- Demetriou's pausing for dramatic effect nearly caused me to break the TV on a few occasions
- And the biggy ... Good introduction with the young lad and how the Brownlow fit in with childhood dreams, but I had to laugh when he pleaded with all mothers across the country to let their sons stay up to watch the Brownlow - maybe that message works better if they actually show the ******* thing live in every state!!

When I told my son that it was bedtime, he was like :o but, that kid-
And I said, a 7 year old isn't going to tell me when it's your bedtime
He said, he was more like 10 - kids always got to have the last word

Demetriou did that pause for effect, and then on other occaisions he read them so fast that you could hardly understand what was being said!!
Was funny when he 'cracked himself up' at one stage though.

The surprise for me was that on the news earlier they said that Dane Swann had had more posessions this season than any other player in history - to me that's huge - but he didn't figure at all.

But yes, Gary Ablett Jr deserves a brownlow 100% - fantastic player - respected by all O:)
You get what you give....

It did go live all around Australia - from Mildura to Warnambool to Lakes Entrance to Wodonga.

Agree about Demetriou's pauses, all through the count, not just at the one or two dramatic moments.

That sh!ts me to tears with the AFL, they try to promote the game to kids yet they want to keep them until past 11pm on a monday night and the friday night games that wrap up around midnight is crap, especially when kids have to get up at the crack of dawn to go and play school footy.
Friday night footy should be made live and events like last night should finish earlier, I like the little round by round wrap-ups but the snippets of the contenders is a waste of time.

Yes, it hardly needs any dramatization in round 8. The suitcase with the votes in it being escorted by amourguard is a fair crock aswell, they've been pre-counted FFS.

A high possession count doesn't automatically mean a player's had a great game, especially these days with modern coaching tactics.
How they get the possessions and then use the ball means so much more.

Have to admit though Swan could consider himself a touch unlucky not to have picked up a few more votes.

Probably in a minority, but really enjoyed Demetriou's vote calling style -the fast pace and dramatic pauses.

Most of Swan's possessions would be around the middle and under the umpires noses, perhaps they do the unthinkable and see what he actually does with the ball. you just have to look at Adam Goodes over the past few seasons to back up your comment, he got 3 votes when he picked up less that 20 possessions last season IIRC.

It's just bad luck for him to be surrounded by such talent, I suppose he gets some compensation by getting the AFLPAMVP each year, it's only going to get tougher for him as Selwood gains experience and class and any other of the 20 elite footballers they have on their list.

yea good point, amazing midfield . wheres cooney had nowhere the competition in his side, and did have a great year. but doesnt excuse the fact imo gary was the standout, but thats the luck of the draw . its a real treat watching this guy master his craft.

Yeah same for me gothe, was working online and saw Ablett wins Brownlow headline on my screen just when things were getting interesting at the end with Juddy making a late charge.....oh well, price you pay for living in the age of instant information I guess. Anyway Juddys late charge didn't last long once Ablett got the 3 against the Swans.

Without wanting to point fingers, there were a few anomalies on the night with voting, but this one stood out as interesting:

Round 19, Adelaide (9.14) def by Coll (13.11) at AAMI Stadium:

3. A. McLeod (Adel)
2. S. Pendlebury (Coll)
1. J. Porplyzia (Adel)

McLeod 31 disposals, Pendlebury 27, Porplyzia 16 disp and 3.2

Thompson 35 disposals, Goodwin 34, Vince 33.
Didak 31 disposals, 13 marks; Cameron Wood 25 disp, 19 hitouts, Swan 30 disposals.

Now - number of disposals does not automatically equal impact, but most media outlets split the BOG between either Didak or Wood in this one, particularly the latter, with any of the other Adelaide players listed up for the 3rd preference. Goes to show how hard it can be to anticipate votes.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

For me the Goodes 3 votes in a 10 goal loss to Geelong, Chapmans 1 vote in a 6 goal game against the Crows, Goodes 2 v Essendon in a 5(ish) goal loss at the SCG and Judds 2 v Port in Round 21 were all, let's say, surprising results.
