If players want free agency. There should be a trade deadline in the middle of the season, players get no say over trades and teams can trade future picks.

That way the crows and whoever else can eyeball players and ask what's going on. If he's leaving. Club gets to look after themselves, send danger to st Kilda or someone for a future first rounder + players etc.

It's bullshit players demand free agency yet still demand where they go via trades. Is what I'm sayin.

Yeah agree with that. They can have preferences and I think in a lot of cases the clubs would accommodate that but right now Geelong have so much power

If it's definitely Geelong he's going to, I reckon the crows should try & do a deal for Motlop who is out of contract???

Why would Geelong deal for him when they get him for free? His manager has already said it's between Adelaide and Geelong. Adelaide have no bargaining power. The only way the Crows might get a trade from Geelong is if Danger cannot accept leaving Adelaide for nothing and requests a trade otherwise he will stay at Adelaide, which is highly unlikely.

Correct Geelong don't have to do a deal, all I said was the crows should try & do a deal, maybe put some pressure on Dangerfield to help with this as some sort of compensation for his time here

Tbh i think it is just one of those things that will come with increased professionalism of the game, and with free agency. Players move around more, club loyalty becomes a rarity rather than the norm. It is only beginning to happen in the AFL but i think we will see it soon enough.

Being open and honest about it seems much better than secretly signing halfway through a season

I'd sooner go out to battle with those who I think have plans of sticking around for the next season, it would be left second guessing their efforts at times if I knew their intentions were to leave our group.
Just my take on it.

Players are currently going into battle with a bloke who is still deciding whether he'll be there next year. Are they second guessing his efforts now?

Danger is a restricted free agent, so can the crows choose to match Geelongs offer then trade him!

Crows have no chance of matching the offer. Not enough salary cap room to match that offer.

Yeah probably right. And I think they have to match the structure of the deal too, so Geelong could just massively front end it and pay him 1.5m next year if they have the cap space

Good point. NBA teams do sign and trade deals all the time. I am not sure how it works with timing in AFL in that the free agent signing would have to be before trade period which I assume it is.

I dunno, I reckon the Cats offer might be backended, so they probably could match it. However, I reckon the Crows have a cut-off point (price-wise) in mind, and in accordance with Walsh's philosophy wouldn't exceed their valuations.

Im still not sure its down to 2 only.
Collingwood are rumoured to have a 1.4m x 5 year deal being worked on and the Hawks have quite a bit of room to manouvre with a big back ended contract, wouldnt be surprised if he ends up at either

With Paddy, Tay Adams and Swanny running through the mids, we may struggle to hit the side of a barn with our kicks ;)

The Hawks have been very quiet on this but I still think they are in with a chance.

When they're getting 100-odd touches between them, something has to hit ;)

I've always considered Hawthorn and Collingwood as the front runners for Danger's signature if he doesn't sign on at the Crows. Both in great spots for tilts at the flag in the coming years and could both over him a nice pay packet.

Danger out, Aish in?

The only way that would happen is if you were able to force the Hawks or pies to trade rather than a free agency grab. Which is possible. The crows could always threaten to match the deal in order to get the teams to the trade table.

The one thing that worries me is not just the contract but the rest of the media and endorsements that he could get when in Melbourne. He would be on the footy show every week etc etc
