There will be a lot of late dinners around the country then.

Brisbane girls are giving the GWS girls a fair “licking” at half time, here’s hoping the GES girls strap it on in the next half!

Just watching a bit of the replay, she is very good. Plenty of off the ball work by her.

Skill level and length of kicks seems to improved greatly

The Bulldogs Katie Brennan received a one game suspension last week ruling her out of the AFLW Grand Final.

The Bulldogs took it to the tribunal and lost.

They're now appealing that decision arguing that the rule interpretations between the mens and womens game is a breach of federal sexual discrimination laws.

Ive heard gerard whateley talk about this recently

basically if it was graded exactly the same in the mens game it would have been a $5k fine, but they didnt want to do that because the women comparatively earn much less. so they decided to keep it as a supsension instead of a fine.

But what i dont understand is why they didnt just scale the fines accordingly? i.e it might work out to be a $500 fine instead. Maybe they thought that didnt sound like enough?

Why dont they just change it to be a percentage of the match fees for both mens and womens like cricket etc?

Wasn't she on a second offense for the year? Would that still be a $5k fine in mens?

Was that the thinking at tribunal over this incident, or prior to the commencement of the season?

Heard last night that this was the deal before the season began. As much as the suspension was a joke, they put this process in place unanimously to have suspensions instead of fines. Now the dogs are just embarrassing themselves

Yep it was decided before the season to have suspensions instead of fines.

Which seemed fine at the time but not seems a bit ridiculous, especially given what Brennan misses for compared to Cotchin

Not sure they have much to go on appealing this, but may make them change the rules for next year

Another aspect is that much of the adjudicating in AFLW is different to AFL - I've seen many tackles, throws and bumps in AFLW that would have been paid free kicks in AFL. So is that sexist that the games are being adjudicated differently? I kind of think, people, on both sides of the divide, need to realise that yes, these women are playing Aussie rules, but they are playing in different competitions.

This may start a healthy debate.

I had a discussion with a female friend last night about female sport. The reason it started was I thought, people blame mens sports for the lack of options for females to play the same sport, but everywhere I look, the sport women are able to play is usually because a male dominated group has organised or facilitated it for them. I asked where the women that feel so strongly about it are? Nowhere.

She brought up the AFLW. Her thing was, people talk down the AFLW because they're women. I said, no, they talk it down because it's horseshit to watch. And if you criticize it, you're automatically a sexist. That's wrong. The AFLW is a great thing for womens sports. But don't try to tell me it's a good standard. Also, a male dominated entertainment corporation, the AFL, is sinking millions into this money pit for the benefit of women.

She said that in lower level leagues, men hold women back from playing sport. In my experience, the majority of people trying to get womens footy and gridiron off the ground are men. I know Gridiron SA has three coaches/team managers for the women. All men. The Spartans allowed three girls to train with us for a season to get them ready for the World Cup selection camp. Two were selected and played in the World Cup in Canada last year.

She asks why we dont have a womens gridiron league in Adelaide. Because we can't find enough women that want to play. There are plenty of people trying hard to get it up and going.

From my point of view, what's holding womens sports back is the lack of participants, and the lack of female supporters. Women that will spend money to watch or support the girls. If every one of them that bitched and moaned about men holding them back in sports bought a membership, the AFLW would be a fully professional league in 12 months.

Can't wait for Q's response.
