Talk on the national game

They said a reason for it was to get a base set first. Once the season is complete then the players can go back to their grass roots clubs and play for them as per normal. This then gives a chance for the girls to play along side their idols that they see on TV. Pretty good initial thinking in my books from the AFL. You really need to trial its concept first anyway to see if its viable to expand it.

In my view, that's not really giving the ladies the best exposure, is it? Most football fans are just coming out of hibernation around Feb/March and I don't think most will be inspired to go and see a stand alone ladies game. Most people care very little about the NAB Cup or make an effort to go to the games at that time of year. Cricket is wrapping up, soccer too.

Why not play the competition as curtain raisers around the mid season byes? Why not have, lets say this weekend in Adelaide where there is no AFL game, a double header with Adelaide hosting a Vic side and Fremantle hosting a Vic side?

I'm sure that's a long term goal, maybe they looked at it the other way and thought it would be perfect timing for the footy starved public.

I'm with you though, why not play curtain raisers to games that are unlikely to pack a full house.

I guess to draw revenue they need to be stand alone games, if it's a curtain raiser the season ticket holders don't pay to see it.

Surely though they won't open up AO, MCG, Gabba etc for a ladies game on it's own just yet?

Why not? You would get more there than you would at any shield game and half of their games are under lights.....

As Port didn't get a team I guess Erin Phillips will be signing with the Crows now? ;)

I think she has some sort of contract with Port anyway unless it is null and void if they dont get a 2017 license
Also I think she's quoted as saying she'll never play for Crows

Women have identified as the key to building crowds

The bbl once it become franchise teams based its whole marketing around attracting the women to games as the women were key to getting the whole family along

Obviously the AFL have seen thec success of this and will be going down the same path

I reckon it will be good.

playing it in Feb/March before their regular season is a good point.

Watched a bit of the game the other day between melbourne and the dogs, and the standard wasnt great but if we only watched footy for the standard, local footy would be dead.

Giving women a pathway is excellent

Hopefully there's a plan to expand to the full 18 teams and mirror the full season before too long. Reckon we'll look back in 20 years and say this was the start of a major rise in the game.

Doubt we will see the full 18 teams for many years.

And some are really broke and couldnt afford it at the moment.

On MMM Roo was saying about all the sponsors lined up and looking to come on board. If it turns out to be real then maybe the AFL are onto something.

Nathan Buckley's sister?

I did watch her interview the other night and it reeked of "I'm thrilled about the expansion but only if it suits me".

The talent pool will be too scarce to warrant the 720+ players required to do so. It wont be marketable enough at the lower end of the scale.

Salisbury North under 15's is currently a better standard. I hope it improves, More exposure I'm sure it will.

My biggest question is yes there may be sponsor dollars but how will they get bag for there buck? Honestly how many would attend a stand alone women's game? They would need to have at least at a minimum double headers and obviously that wont work with interstate sides. Its just not viable to open a stadium for 250 people to go watch an 'AFL' Game.

Many may think I'm being sexist or what ever I'm clearly not, I have 3 daughters and if they chose to play Football I'll be there biggest supporter but unfortunately at this stage I just don't think the product is there at this stage.

I reckon the tv ratings are what they are chasing. I think everyone was surprised at how many people watched the women's big bash.

I'm actually thinking of encouraging my daughter to take up footy again, she has a great one grab mark and kicks as good as most women I've umpired and she's only 13. Cricket, athletics, volleyball and netball may have to take a back seat though.

I'd be more likely to go to Adelaide Oval and watch a Geelong women's team play there than the men's team in the future.
Not if it was part of a double header though.

Its just an idea to enhance the sport further

You can see what 1 game has already done for public awareness melb vs bulldogs

Now theyre creating a little 8 week platform that wont be highly profitable but will get massive exposure and will be highly sponsored

At this stage it looks kinda dull and it looks easy to write off but look at how the big bash has evolved. It certainly wont get that big but i know when theres footy on tv i tend to leave it on that channel no matter whos playing cos theres shit all else to watch

The afl would never do anything if it was gonna cost them theyre too wise they prob couldnt careless about attendance to games its more about brand exposure brand awareness getting 50% of population hands dirty with footy too (females)

It's also about making footy a viable option for young girls to take up rather than soccer or another sport
