He and Brad Ebert will make an excellent leadership combination IMO.

Congrats Boaky!

I wont be able to make it tonight.

But i'm looking forward to hearing how it went from those who do go

The opposition looks to be a mixture of SANFL Reserves and Under 18's and in all honestly it should be very one sided.

Given the shape of the list - and the on field performances - for the majority of the time since 2004, I don't expect immediate miracles, I see tonight as the start of a new (Hinkley) era.

We can win 8 - 10 games this year, but thats on the proviso we have a good year injury-wise, and Butcher stays fit and recaptures some form.

Well I went for a look. I reckon the crowd must've been around 4,000 or more & a great atmosphere. Was a good match, Magpies were fairly competitive and the Power side had a lot of new players who looked very capable. Pittard impressed me even though I didn't think much of him previously - Carlisle looks to be fit and interested in making a statement and the regulars also looked sharp. Some really good signs for the next 2-3-4 years. I'm tipping Hinkley will have as much impact at Port this year as Sanderson did last year at the Cows. :D

Agree with Ruben about the atmoshere last night it was a great night some things i took out of the night were first and foremost i think the magpies will be a lot better side this year than last and i'm really happy with what i seen for the powers future some great signs.

I was impressed with our size looks like the boys have spent plenty of time in the gym which is a good sign. Brad Ebert and Hartlett were really good early then spend time on the bence but for mine best of the night and i think by a mile was Kane Mitchell hopefully Hitchcock breaks his leg or something like that to get this guy on the senior list he was outstanding last night with 30+ touches and i would say a dozen tackles this guy looks like he is going to turn in to a super player for us.

Other players i thought were very good Pittard, O'Shea, Schultz and Broadbent (who looks super fit)

disappointments for me were Montfries, Redden and Heath. Expected more out of these 3. Also Stevenson i believe this guy will be a good player for us he started well but then i think got a knock and wasnt seen again for the night i was disappointed with that.

Of the new guys- Neade looks super quick and smart but just to small, Colquhoun just needs time in the gym, Wines gets in very good spots but for mine goes to ground way to easy get that out of his game and will be very good he size is unreal for an 18 year old his a tank, I think weve found a good one in Mason Shaw key forward for us for many years to come.

yeah I'd agree with most of that. Hombsch's smother on the Thurgood kick was great to see. Hopefully Trengove isn't too bad, think he may have just copped a knock. Mason Shaw already looks ahead of Dan Stewart and John Butcher. Neade is small yeah but he should be there in R1 right at Schultz feet. I'm hoping Pittard isn't wasted down back for too long and gets a spot on the wing, where I think he should play, some of his passes into a heavily congested forward line at the start of the second half last night hit players right on the chest.

I'd have to agree with most of that too Carey, but I actually thought Monfries was pretty good!

Miichell's workrate is outstanding and Shaw looks promising. Wines is a bull and I must admit I didn't notice the going to ground aspect too much, will havta keep an eye on it :P Ah Chee has something special about him too and really hoping we can see him come on a bit this year.

Some of our most important players this year weren't rolled out unfortunately. Boak, Wingard, Lobbe and of course Butcher and Gray.

I couldn't make it with Junior Boon's basball training, but it seems there are a few names noticed in the training reports who stood out, without too much surprise, in the trial.

Kane Mitchell - If we want to show the young lads how to train, prepare and run to the limit, then this bloke must be elevated to the senior list. He shone in the training I saw after Xmas and look forward to seeing him in a match. I think his decision making also looked good.

Ollie Wines - Get him in there right away. Wingard has shown what a lad can do in their first season, Wines looks a ripper.

Jake Neade - Not much of him but people I know rate him pretty highly with his attack on the ball and more importantly for someone his size, the body.

Mason Shaw - Big boy already, looks to move well. Very promising.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Most of those, if not all, i feel will make their way into the best 22 fairly early in the season (Mitchell the exception as he needs a spot on the senior list first).

Our midfield looks to be pretty settled heading into round 1, and the forward line will be minus Robbie Gray, with Butcher playing late in the NAB also pushing for selection.

What are other posters presumptions as to how our back 6 will start against the Demons? There is talk out of the trial game that pittard could possibly be looked at on a wing. Carlisle and Trengove to lock down the key defensive posts, with Stevenson, Heath, Hombsch, Cassisi, Hartlett (although i expect more midfield time for him), Jonas, Logan and even Clurey all pushing for spots. I cant recall this many names a possibility of starting back there in a couple of years!

If they dont elevate Mitchell I'll be very very surprised and well as very pi$$ed off. Going to be top 5 in our B&F.

I believe Pfeiffer is currently on the rookie list, but spent time on the main list last year.

Letter from KT. News that they are in talks with 3 national brands for major sponsor is great. Can't wait until a release is made surrounding that.

Incredibly bored at work, so thought i'd copy Baron and do a win / loss assessment of our games this season...

Round 1 vs Melbourne @ MCG- Win. Should win this game to get our season off on the right note.
Round 2 GWS @ AAMI- Win. If we are to be taken seriously, we need to beat GWS. Similar to our game v GC in 2012, i think we will reverse the horror of the previous encounter
Round 3 Adelaide @ AAMI- Loss. If we are to win a showdown this season, this will be it, given the age of our squad may work against us late in the year. Still, I think the crows will have the edge.
Round 4 Gold Coast @ Metricon- Win. I think (and hope) that we are a better side than the suns.
Round 5 West Coast @ AAMI. Loss. The eagles have had the edge on us for a few seasons now, and at AAMI, have given us a few towelings of late.
Round 6 North Melbourne @ Blundstone- Loss. Even though I think we can pinch these sorts of matches, i still expect the roos to get the job done.
Round 7 Richmond @ AAMI. Loss. Like north, these games are 50/50. Still, the tigers will go in favourites.
Round 8 Carlton @ Etihad. Loss- Mick will re-juvenate the blues, and they will have too much class for us.
Round 9 Geelong @ AAMI. Loss. No where near the cats yet.
Round 10 Western Bulldogs @ TIO. Win- Our record at TIO is serviceable and the dogs are re-building much like us.
Round 11 Bye
Round 12 GWS @ Skoda. Win- Fresh off the break I would like to think we will account for GWS here.
Round 13 Sydney @ AAMI. Loss- With Tippett making his swans debut, they will have too much class for us.
Round 14 Collingwood @ AAMI. Loss- The pies have recruited smartly and will account for us easily.
Round 15 Essendon @ Etihad. Loss- Essendon to get the job done here.
Round 16 Hawthorn @ AAMI. Loss- Would be stoked if we got within 5 goals of hawthorn, too many stars for us to counter.
Round 17 St. Kilda @ Etihad. Win- I like our chances against the saints, think we match up evenly and might be another 50/50 contest we can win.
Round 18 Brisbane @ AAMI. Loss- I expect Brisbane to improve this year and get the job done.
Round 19 Adelaide @ AAMI. Loss- Crows will have the fitness over a young and tiring port adelaide side at this stage of the season.
Round 20 Geelong @ Simonds. Loss- No chance.
Round 21 Gold Coast @ AAMI. Win- Still expect us to get the job done.
Round 22 Fremantle @ Patersons. Loss- Freo will kill us with their run and carry on the wide expanses of Subi.
Round 23 Carlton @ AAMI. Loss- Carlton too good for us here.

This gives us a 7-15 W/L ratio, and again an improvement on past seasons. the 50/50 games against sides like richmond, north, brisbane, st kilda will determine if we can get above 8 wins.
