Stupid rule with draft and priority picks which some clubs took advantage of,cant understand AFL findings.Melbourne should have lost draft picks,do feel sorry for Bailey as the pressure he would have been under to comply with certain people at the club.Hard to believe Cameron Schwab is still at the club, glad Chris Connelly has been suspended.

West Coast won't be touched. With the new stadium in Perth coming in WCE will become Australias biggest club with the most paid up followers....

In all seriousness what is tanking? It's a business and you make decisions to better your chances of success if not now then in the future.
Enjoy taking back $500k of what you already gave them fools. You'll be giving them 1 million more in 2 years after what they spent on lawyer fees on top of the fine. More money that could be better used elsewhere....

Guessing you're talking about tanking here JK? West Coast seem to orchestrate it that they are either right up or right down, going back to the early 2000's. After losing Judd and Cousins, they didn't stuff around trying to finish an honourable 8th, like the Crows would have, or try to be a heroic cinderella story like Port in 07. Cox and Kerr also seemed to have some long injury stretches too, meaning younger players got some experience, they finished right down on the ladder, and Cox and Kerr weren't burnt out for the twilight of their careers and can still play good footy.

West Coast Grand Finals in 2005/6, finish 3rd in 2007 then 2nd bottom in 2008 .. Nothing suspicious about that at all ;)

Collingwood 2001/2002 Grand finalists finish 2nd bottom in 2005 and claim Pendelbury and Thomas (Priority Pick) in the draft.

Carlton and the Saints could probably be scrutinised also.

How has that worked out for them?

West coast are lucky they didn't have someone like Brock McLean on their list. Can't wait until Carlton give him his marching orders.

Please don't use the word honourable and the Crows in the same sentence. You don't get draft picks stripped for being honourable.

Not guilty of tanking but found guilty of breaching AFL rule 1.6: that they had acted in a manner prejudicial to the interests of the competition.

I think that means they couldn't find enough evidence of what everyone knows actually happened, as most expected they wouldn't. I think it also means the AFL have a conflict on this issue as many mentioned such as JK and I think you on here.

To quote Caro in the Age:
"The club has been fined $500,000 - almost double Adelaide's fine for draft and salary cap tampering. Only Carlton and the Demons themselves have ever been fined more in the past and both those were for salary cap cheating."

Yeah, coz the AFL stripped them of their draft picks because of their onfield efforts from 2000 onwards
Interesting that the West Coast were down in the early 2000's, right up by the mid-2000's, and always just had it over the Crows in those years.
Never said there wasn't another way to win flags, just this appears to be the way West Coast have gone about it.
And no, I'm not a Crows supporter.

No, but they had the advantage (and fair enough) of numerous father-son picks, so they essentially got too high pick without havign to make hard choices early on in those drafts.

Been very lucky with the father-son rule, but that's not their fault.

Certainly isn't, and if clubs can create environments where sons want to follow where their fathers have played then they should be rewarded and it should be encouraged in these days of drafts and free agency.

Getting off topic a little but if you look at Geelong's drafting from memory from about 1998-2004 (years could be out here) you can see why they have had 3 premierships since 2007.

The lesson is you don't need to bottom out if you recruit well.

Yes, Ablett and Scarlett were big wins but even excluding those two they had great drafting success without needing top 10 draft picks.

Im a little confused
What is the fine for if there is no evidence that they deliberately tried to lose the game?

Yes, Ablett and Scarlett were big wins but even excluding those two they had great drafting success without needing top 10 draft picks.

We also had Father-Sons like David Clarke(1998), Tim Callan (2002), Mark Blake (2003), Nathan Ablett (2004), Tom Hawkins (2006), Adam Donohue (2007)
1999 - Corey (pick 8), Chapman (31), Ling (38), Enright (47)
2000 - Hunt (44), Max Rooke (Rookie)
2001 - Bartel (8), Kelly (17), Johnson (24)
2002 - Mackie (7), Byrnes (40)
2003 - Other than Blake, no one of note
2004 - Matthew Egan (62)
2005 - Varcoe (15), Stokes (61)
2006 - Selwood (7)
2007 - Harry Taylor (17), Mumford (Rookie)
2008 - Motlop (39)
2009 - Menzel (17), Duncan (28), Christensen (40), Vardy (42), J-Pod (Rookie)

Obviously 1999 and 2001 were the stand out years but there have been some good pick-ups in other years too that made an immediate impact. I suppose you go through any of the successful teams and find some bargains but never a pick higher than 7. We also picked up a couple of spud father-sons. "In Wells we trust"
