Leon Davis quits Collingwood

Talk on the national game

No hate, just think he is being "sold" as something he is not, a superstar. I see him as an above average player who has, in 200+ games, proven to be a solid contibutor at both ends of the ground, but no superstar.

My comment to a friend on the weekend - "How many times does Davis get mentioned in Collingwoods best players list after a game? Quite often. How often is he best or second best? Not often."

His stats also dont show that his opponent kicked the first 2 goals of the grand final with nil pressure from Leon.

I stand by my comments.

I'm suprised the term "front runner" hasn't been used yet- I would not argue to the contrary.
You are right the Booney- Davis has been a solid contributor, without being outstanding.
Had Davis been taller, the expectations of him as a player would've been higher, and reduced his value in the game.
I think Collingwood's reduced offer was quite fair and reasonable, as it's was giving him another year on the payroll, probably with limited expectations. But I guess not having seen the offer itself, Davis and his management may have been correct in declining.
The reduced offer likely was to have been a) to reduce salary cap pressure/keep a handy player at reduced odds b) offload Davis, without pulling the trigger- let Davis been the one to walk

I consider Leon Davis a very similar player (skills and ability wise) to Geelong's Andrew Mackie. The big difference between the two is that on Grand Final day, Mackie grows an extra leg, whilst Leon just goes missing.

He ain't a superstar, correct. But I wouldn't consider him mediocre either (not your words). A solid contributor as you said.

I loved watching him play, he often did some special things and kicked some spectacular goals. I guess I'll remember him for that rather than his propensity to go AWOL in GFs. Should probably stop feeling the need to defend him too.

I like Mackie, he's a great player and all that. But he doesn't have the skills that Davis does. I think Davis had a stat this year that was something like 94 consecutive kick ins that hit the target (100% efficiency).

As to whether Davis applies himself as often as Mackie (or in big games) is another point to debate and I'd agree with you there.

I certainly wont be considering him a "gun" at the end of his career, whether he finishes it with us or collingwood or anywhere else.

IF he does end up at port, I'll judge his effectiveness by what he provides for the young players on and off the field. Whether this gets proven to be an sound investment or a liability remains to be seen, at this stage i am leading towards a liability.
