Hawthorn of the late eighties and West Coast early nineties the best for mine. And we had to play em both. :(

And Port beat Geelong at Geelong only a few weeks before the GF, no one has got close since in nearly 4 years.

And there is no way that Geelong line up is the best of all time, Brisbane anyone?

Crows got within a goal a couple of years ago IIRC.

Brisbane and geelong are on par imo regarding respective dominance. If the cats had not of stumbled in 08 they would have surpassed brisbane imo.I wouldnt talk us down by making the granny. My point is that geelong were streets ahead of the rest of the comp that year and to say that port had a comparative list to the cats that year is far fetched.

IF St Kilda had kicked straight in 2009, the Cats would still be searching for #2. IF is a big word..but I see your point ;)

Brisbane Lions the best team of the past 20 years. (I'm not old enough to remember back beyond 1990 or so..)

I was unfortunate (silly?) enough to hear a bit of the 5aa sports show yesterday. Rowe’s claim that the Cornes brothers have been treated badly this season b/c of who their father is, and that perhaps the club would be happier if the Cornes connection was finally removed was laughable I thought. Did nothing but stroke the ego of his off-sider. So form has nothing to do with it? I agree that Chad was stiff at times, but Kane has been mediocre at best.

maybe i'm missing something , but what have several of the last posts got to do with the topic.
kane and his brother have been treated with absolutely no respect at all, considering the service and contribution they have made to their club.

get a grip how many games have you watch this year. Last two season chad was average at best and when he was selected early in the season he really struggled after his first game. And Kane for a 3 time best and fairest winning should be doing alot better and stop sulking for not playing were he wants. these two and several others were are continually listed as hard down by need to take a good look at themselves and their performances this year.

If i recall...James...chad held the no.1 rebounding defender, fisher, to bugger all possessions a couple of weeks back and was easily in ports top 3 on the ground. probably the best and only decent match up your match committee have made all year. oh and i have a firm grip on reality mate unlike some posters on this thread!!!

The main issue is Chad and Kane's confidence was shot down by Primus at the start of the year. They were preparing to be leaders of the club, then to be told they arent in the best 22 and have to work harder than everyone else to get a spot, while young kids who have proved nothing are gifted games...... I cant stand Chad, but i can even see his confidence was shot and can see he should have been in that side (rebuilding or not). Him playing intills confidence in the young bloke next to him. Well thats the way i see it anyway.

I am not talking them down as much as challenging your premise that just because you make a GF you are a great side or equal to your opponent. You could have thrown a blanket over 8 sides that season including Port. One of them had to make the GF. That doesn't mean they were as good as Geelong or even near it. Minor round games always throw up anomolies but it is finals where the men are sorted from the boys. Under your theory NM were almost as good as Geelong and yet what have they done since? It was just one of those seasons with a clear pack leader and then a pack.

If playing in a GF automatically made you a better player than someone who hasn't played in one then Michael Pettigrew is a better player than Andrew Swallow.

I don't know if the Brisbane comment is directed at me but, if it is, I said ONE of the best sides of all time. I reckon Brisbane were slightly ahead of Geelong 2007. But it's a close call. Port in 2007 somehow found enough spirit to drag up one last finals tilt on the back of a core of ageing players. Geelong meanwhile were in their prime with 9 All-Australians.

Back on topic - (how surprising the 2007 GF and the woes of the PAFC in general came up in this thread! ;) )

In his day Kane was one of the better midfielders in the comp so whatever the reasons it's sad to see him struggling like he has this year.

My post states early in the year, since his return he has been good. Chad needed to earn his respect back after the last two season and he should no longer be gifted a game. that has been the problem in the past

two seasons of serious injury??? to chads own admission last season was embarassing so look at it how you like. And at the moment my club isnt doing well, but its a cycle of AFL like or not you can either be a middle of the road side or bottom out and climb up again. just the same way you guys picked up Thomas and pendleberry for being in the same position.

Port managed to beat a Hawthorn on the rise in Tasmania after being two goals down in the last ninety seconds of that match. Port managed to defeat Geelong at Skilled Stadium. That hasn't been done since and a Bulldogs side with was 13-0 has played us there since then despite what many say about our Skilled run.

Port also won about 11 of their last 13 matches that season and played some exciting run and gun football in a manner very similar to what Geelong did that year. Even during the first stages of that Grand Final Port were up and about but couldn't nail that first goal which could have lifted their confidence before Geelong got a sniff and went bunta.

To the poster saying Port where 4th-5th that year sorry mate but that's bollocks. They won their Prelim Final by 86 points for a start. West Coast had no fit players so Port where ahead of them and I believe that Port beat the Pies at the G that year so just because they nearly rolled the Cats in the Prelim that doesn't make them better than Port.

People forget just how good Port were in 2007 only because the Cats were better.

the day port won at geelong, the cats rested about 4-5 players, there were a few smart people who took the $4.50 about Port that day, and in the end they feel over the line with the last kick of the day

Thought I heard on the radio that Kevin Sheedy is keen to get both the Cornes boys over to GWS, as stated before, I think Port will take an offer for K Cornes with both hands without to many problems.

I reckon that's what could be happenning actually. GWS would want a Kane Cornes type to help balance out their young list and they have the money to pay him on his current contract. Port then get some form of trade compensation and can move on.
