As for everybody slagging port, well lets be honest every club is going through or has been through some hardship of some kind. Geelong are going great guns at the moment, but in the period of 89-95 lost 4 from 4 grand finals.....the bulldogs, melbourne, north melbourne and hawthorn are some clubs that in the last 15 years have contemplated merging or folding, and are all still in existence, and port will be no different. Not directed at anybody but its easy to kick teams when they are down........port wont be a force for at least 5-7 years and everyone realises that, but we will be back eventually. As for our supporter base, well its pretty hard to get fans when they predominately come from supporters from our 9 sanfl clubs, and when 8 of those clubs hate the port adelaide magpies with a passion, its pretty obvious to see that our supporter base was never going to be as strong as the crows. My problem with the power supporter base is we can get an admirable crowd when success is there, but they all disappear when the tide turns, more so than other clubs. Im a die hard supporter and i will stick with my club through thick and thin, and its shattering when you see empty seats when the boys need them most, yet when success is floating ie 2001-2004, port were getting pretty good attendances....

You will get nowhere talking sense like that in here mate... ;)

agree with all of that.. BUT why put the word port in there then, if it was always going to be hard to get fans there??
not having a go at all i just think when the people decided on the name they were thinking old school.. and yes i know nothing can be done about it now but it seems not enough thought went into it..

the worst thing about the power is that they have tried to affiliate themselves with the magpies... how many times have i heard a power fan or even choco for that matter say they've won 37 or 38 premierships and so on. . . they have supporters that hate port magpies aswell and they want nothing to do with them . . . and a funny thing about this live the creed thing is that apparently andrew mcloed asked tredrea on the radio what it was about and he didnt know? ? ?

Stuff like this flies around all the time, just don't be precious about it and let it stick.

In reality there's only one way for Port to shut everyone up, and that's on the field.

Didn't the initial Power press releases predict crowds of 40 to 50 thousand when the 'new Port' team came in ??

I suspect the old Port Adelaide administration thought that all the Magpies fans would come across with them, and presumably that supporters of the other 8 SANFL clubs would climb aboard as they did for the Crows.
They tried wooing a broader supporter base, then got worried about losing their traditional support and re-embraced the past.
They've sat on an uncomfortable fence ever since, being neither one nor the other convincingly.

It was doomed from the start.
The traditional supporters did not have the money for, or lacked the motivation to spend it on, a Crows style AFL club.
Presumably, while they liked the idea of Port moving on to dominate the big league, they didn't think about the inevitable changes iiithe move would bring.
The loss of the traditional colours and the move from Alberton, though inevitable, surprised and culled a few.
The success was not immediate enough for a supporter base used to their club dominating.
They have not been successful consistently enough to hold that group's attention and devotion.
The supporters of the other 8 SANFL clubs did not want to support any form of "Port" - unless perhaps it was Penfolds. ;)

In the longer term they may attract a new supporter base from a younger set who did not grow up antipathetic to Port Adelaide.
To do that, they are going to have to make themselves attractive by providing consistently competitive performances, not a see-saw ride.

While in Melbourne I supported the Power to some extent on a SA vs VIC. basis, but have been disappointed by the poor consistency.
Back here I don't have the same motivation and am more reminded of the Port of old that I disliked.
The inconsistency and, particularly, the failure to do anything about it has also eroded my sympathy.

Well they did until they started annoying everyone. In 1997 I thought I'd check out a few of their games and couldn't get to the Carlton game because it was sold out.

When was the last time they sold out a minor round game that didn't involve the Crows?
It's all the SANFL's fault.
