as reported today

ESSENDON boss Peter Jackson has put enormous pressure on new coach Matthew Knights, saying the club should play finals in 2009 and "push for top four" in 2010.
Complex prelude to a Knights tale

If not, Jackson said, those in charge probably shouldn't be at the club.

Memo to Jackson - no chance

That was why he got the job, he told the panel that Essendon had the squad to go all the way, the pressure is all self imposed, where as Hardwick was much more realistic saying that it would be a rebuilding time at Bomberland.
My prediction, 1 coach in 27 years, 3 in 30, could even be 3 in 29.

I am an Essendon supporter and I couldnt be happier with the appointment of Matthew Knights. He is very dedicated to his work, extremely proffessional (probably too proffessional for SANFL) and has done his apprentiship to qualify for the top job. Also Id like to add to all those Port Adelaide Magpie people out there, including 'hearts on fire' who gave him no chance at their club almost as soon as he was appointed because he wasnt Port Adelaide! Most of you spent more time bagging him instead of supporting your team, showing him no respect. Why did Port appoint Matthew? At that stage they were happy with the direction he had in mind for the club, but the club didnt want to change and are still paying for it today by living in its PAST glory years. Jacks following year was 3rd only because the cheque book was brought out for their favourite son. Something that was apparently not available when Knights needed it. You should be embarrassed the way you and your club treated him. but..thanks for pretty much forcing him away to now have the job he deserves. I certainly respect the opinion of the Essendon football club of who can and cant coach far more than that of the Port Magpies club! Did you notice the Magpies did worse this year to the year Knights had them and it has been too long since to keep blaming Matthew Knights for their lack of success! I hope Knightsy does well and proves his worth!

Finally someone in SA has something positive 2 say re- Matthew Knights & with that PomPom, your on the money i reckon.I believe Matty will be a better coach now than then.Your right with the direction he wanted 4 the club,Its strange one year the club is happy with that, the next it want 2 go back 2 the past.As we all know the game has changed so much over the years & if you don't change with it you get caught 2 far behind as the (players & board) found out by not supporting matty's direction. It doesn't all fall in place in one year,it can take 3 & i think that was matthews plan, but typical PAMFC they wanted their own back on board & throw in the extra $$$ like PomPom said, 2 show that it was the right desicion 2 get rid of Matty & buy a premiership,it leaves you worse off now than then!Have another exciting year,i'II be watching with interest PAMFC & Matty just do what you thinks best, as i 2 will support you & the Essendon FC.

You're the first I've heard say that, as a Bombers supporter I was totally dumbfounded when I heard the appointment, and I've seen/heard nothing since to change that feeling.

I hope I am proven wrong, but if I had a crystal ball it would be showing bottom 4 for 08 & 09, and another new coach part way through '09.

Big call. The forward line revolves around Loyld and Lucas, with either one out the the team struggles. They have some good players but still. They might play finals but heck top 4 in 2 years time.

As an Essendon supporter I was also disappointed with Knights being named as coach I would have preferred Neale Daniher and then either Hardwick or Sumich to be appointed. But the decision by the Essendon football club has been made and like it or not it isn't going to change (at least for the next couple of years).

Only time will tell how Knights can coach at this level. I too hope he proves me wrong and can get Essendon back in the top four again. I only hope that we don't go backwards as we seemed to be heading in the right direction this year.

I think poor recruiting over the last 4 or 5 years has been one of the main reasons Essendon has fallen so this area too needs to be fixed.

But silent hour, what has Daniher done in his time(nothing)& i can't see why Hardwick or Sumich deserves 2 be infront of Knights, they have been assistants, where as Knights has done that & coached.I think Knights has copped alot of unfair criticism. He's worked alongside Sheeds & aswell as Sheeds, the club,Hirdy,Lloyd & the rest of the boys, their all right behind Knights & i think they know alot more than the average supporter, not saying your average silent hour, but i think he needs our support,as does the club.So mate lets not bag the bloke because he's come from Richmond,he can't help that,he's here 2 do his best for our team, club & supporters.

FM I'm not bagging Knights he was IMO not the right choice.

As I said I hope he proves me wrong because I want Essendon to be successful again. Not having much knowledge of the VFL I can't really give an opinion on what he did with Bendigo but I don't think his coaching record is that good.

Still he will have my support while he is coaching Essendon and time will tell whether he was the right choice.

The Knights appointment reminds me of that Simpsons episode when NASA is looking for their 'Averagenaughts' and Homer rings them up from Moes...

NASA Guy: Gentlemen, our extensive search is over.

Yeah, I'll bet the Knights supporters are really relieved that Essendon didn't end up with Choco or Bomber. 8)

Its not about me, its about Daniher. Hes respected as a coach, got the Dees into a GF, Knights has done nothing both in the SANFL and VFL and I'm actually not the only one saying it, 99% of footy supporters are saying it so if you're having a go at me you're having a go at basically the whole footy world.
