How's this shit?

_________________________________________________________________

THE AFL will trial four field umpires rotating through the three on-field positions in all matches during the next three bye-affected rounds.

The move is a change from previous years, where four on-field umpires – up from the usual three – were used in the corresponding rounds.

This system was trialled in JLT Community Series matches in recent seasons, as well as a VFL game.

Some field umpires will officiate two games per round in this period.

AFL football boss Steve Hocking said the umpiring department, headed by Grant Williams and Damian Farrow, were keen to better understand the benefits of being able to flexibly manage the four umpires' match involvement.

All 18 clubs have been notified of the change, with the hope the trial:

- Enable the collection of data and observations to help determine if this on-field umpiring model should be one considered for the future.

- Develop insights as to whether such a four-umpire model will enhance the career longevity of umpires.

- Potentially allow the best decision-making umpires the opportunity to officiate in multiple games should the model reduce the physical demands on a umpire.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Just give the boundary umpires the option to call clear free kicks as they are the ones who get the view that the fans get and is usually the 180 opposite of what the field umpires see

Saw this trialled once in a SANFL practise game, was the best umpiring overall I've ever seen in my life.
Never trialled or used again. :?

It doesn't complicate it when people in the right positions can make decisions.
More people in the right position means more consistency.

Traditionally with the trial the boundary umps only called the obvious ones that field umpires were in poor positions for. Most sports have a similar system and it works well and everyone regards it a no brainer.

Not worth discussing though as its too obviously a no brainer that involves common sense, would never catch on at AFL house for those reasons alone.

Therefore it will never happen in the AFL...

During the three weeks six game/byes period last year they used four umpires a game: https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2018/13/haw-v-adel https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2018/14/coll-v-carl

And they did it in 2017 too: https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/13/port-v-bl

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Considering these days it is the non officiating umpire 50m away making most of the calls this is a good idea

I was referring to boundary umpires been given extra powers not 4 having 4 field umpires. Two completely different things.
You could have 200 field umpires and the twits would still find all 200 of themselves in the wrong spots at crucial times.

Fremantle are to avoid training at Optus Stadium indefinitely. Lobb now has a foot injury and will miss a large chunk, if not all, of the season.
