The media used to know what was going on because years ago there was a trusted few who had access to club information. These days, with more journalists than players, clubs are far more guarded with information they release. As a result, the media have decided to keep the headlines rolling by taking educated (or in some cases - uneducated) guesses. This is why the swing to opinion pieces rather than facts.
I know my club Hawthorn took a stance a couple of years ago and decided to tell the media nothing. The bi-product of that is you have to wear all sorts of ridiculous allegations because the media don't like being treated like the fools they are.
Just look at the way they handled the 'Walker having a beer at the football' incident. A nothing story, but the media go off half cocked, without knowing the facts, and treat it as the crime of the century. The amazing thing about the 'Walker to GWS' story is very few have asked Taylor himself, and those who did ask haven't listened to what he's been saying.
