Neil Balme ruled out the captaincy the other day I thought

He was talking in response to Ablett coming out in the media and saying he wanted to be a captain as though he was pressuring the club to give it to him to keep him.

Balmey's response was that no-one would get the captaincy at Geelong that way. I read into his comments that the club weren't too impressed by the tactic.

Balme ruled out giving the captaincy to entice someone to stay, he didn't rule out the fact that Ablett might in fact earn the captaincy one day.

Podsiadly has hardly touched it the big games thie year. See the St.Kilda and Colligwood games, clearly his best is not good enough to match with the best.Funny thing is, they ( the match comittee ) do think Hawkins is a ruckman, wouldn't have played him there last night if they didn't. Simple.

Ottens, Mooney and Milburn, yep, they are gone. Hunt and Lonergan I'm not so sure about and Ling looked to be one paced. Slow.

When you have been over taken and are no longer the best you need to figure out who can match it with the best. Plenty last night showed they no longer can.

And this makes Pods different from just about any other key forward in the league how? **** delivery = no bag. I don't believe that Pods was the problem last night. On your comment the only Cats who should front up next year would be Gazza (gone) and Bartel. The match committee got it wrong for mine, Mooney goes and Hawkins goes up front. How can Hawkins be called a spud just because he has played half a season in the ruck? Mate that comment is Bay 13 stuff.

REB

Touchy touchy. My comments on Hawkins are based on the last two years. The bloke has been gifted a spot in one of the best teams on the park and has never taken the bull by the horns. Sure, the match committee chose to play him as a ruckman and play Podsiadly up forward. Still think Hawkins is a dud. Might be wrong, wont be the first time.

I mentioned about half a dozen blokes who I think might be past being able to compete with the best, who will now be Collingwood, St.Kilda and the impressive Fremantle, Melbourne and other developing young, fast lists.

I dont agree with your comment on Mooney, funnily enough. I think either Mooney or Podsiadly should stay and although Podsiadly had a good year ( when he played at Skilled ) I'd keep Mooney.

Did I get rid of Scarlett, Selwood, Enright, Varcoe etc etc? Nup, so your comment suggesting only Ablett and Bartel would be the ones I would front up again is a little over the top.

Oh well, good while it lasted, we still achieved the best ever record in the space of a 100 game period but that means stuff all really.
I was wondering after 1995 if I'd ever see a flag so can't complain. :D

Nah, not really mate. Just disagree thas'all. Actually as a supporter I am thankful for what this group has been able to deliver. Never cared for the 'dynasty' talk, don't really care how we are 'viewed' just happy to finally see my mob win a bloody flag. The way I see it we won one flag as a great side and won another as a good side. Didn't mean to come across as grumpy as I did.

Play on!

We'd all take 2 premierships in 3 years.

It's been a great ride for Geelong supporters. The club managed to build a list that was the best in the competition for 3 years. Somehow or other Hawthorn snuck in a premiership in the middle but that's footy. I think the 2008 loss spurred on the success in 2009.

I can tell you..Finished second after 22 rounds( played Geelong once during the year and lost by a goal)
Won qualifying final by 9 goals
Won Prelim final by 8 goals
Had Grand Final virtually won at 3/4 time(with Croad gone early and Clinton Young gone by Halftime)

I'm far from a Clarkson fan, but that premiership in 2008 has to rank as one of the best coaching performances ON THE DAY, when it REALLY mattered, I could imagine. The way Hawthorn built to a crescendo during the 2008 finals series and then nailed it on the big day was awesomely orchestrated.

Ordinary AFL player, bit like Brett Chalmers a few years ago. The perfect body for the game, sadly the heart is not as hard.

I agree

I was commenting more on how a team that dominated the comp for 3 years lost to a team that since then has missed the finals and went 0-1 in finals this year. When you look back in 20 years you will wonder how that happened.

Hawthorn were a very exciting team in 2008 and outplayed Geelong on the day when it mattered.

Seriously though, I have very fond memories of Brett Chalmers pulling a heartsring in the 1997 Grand Final and limping off the field. I also have very fond memories of Tommy Hawkins icing a pressure goal in the last quarter of the Grand Final last year. 8)
