Soccer will soon be ruling the world and Aussie Rules chiefs are shooting themselves in the foot.
Lets hope that someone on the appeals board has some common sense regards to the game as it should be played. Not Marshmallow stuff!!!

It already does rule the world I'd say...

There' something we can agree on!

Reddeer wrote:It probably doesn't rule Australia yet but it will soon with decisions like this one!!

I'd say it's close to ruling NSW and QLD. Melb has a HUUUUGE following and we all know what happens when the Socceroos play - it's close to if not a sellout. SA is still a little way behind with Aussie Rules being the game of choice for most and I'd say it's a similar story out West.

But when you look at junior participation, Soccer is by far and away the most popular sport in this country.

I was a huge AFL fan before heading overseas, with a strong interest in English Football. My number 1 interest now is English Football, with the AFL taking a big backseat as the game becomes more and more sanitised. Even before I left, I found the game at local level far more entertaining to watch than the AFL because it resembles the game as it is meant to be played.

I'm at the stage where I'm not sure if it's worth buying a season ticket for next season because I'm not sure how much enjoyment I'd get out of it. (Plus I'm unemployed, so have no $ to pay for it   )

Verdict just released: Buddy Franklin's SUSPENSION STILL STANDS. APPEAL FAILED

The AFL appeals board has dismissed the challenge by Hawthorn forward Lance Franklin against his two-match ban.

After a hearing lasting nearly two-and-a-half hours, the three-man panel took just five minutes to rule on the appeal.

It will never be "history" ... As each generation comes through, they won't have previous generations to compare the game to (sadly) and they will grow up watching AFL, whatever shape or form it might be at that time, and like it.

Im not going to comment on the incident, except to say I go to the footy to see contested footy, and see those blokes who put their bodies on the line get their just applause from spectators and critics alike, and sadly it keeps going further away from the game I was so passionate about.

Missing soon will be all body clashes and pack-marking situations don't seem to be occurring as frequently so they'll probably go too ... Tacklers are being rewarded for bludging and those who are first to the ball are being penalised for making it their object (this last one goes against the fundamental principle of the game IMHO), unless they are good enough to make themselves fall over and then it's an instant "In the back" decision .. But at least it evens out, as the ball carrier can drop the ball when tackled these days and usually get away with it.

I cant believe ex players have to deliberate these crap findings and keep a straight face in doing it.
Absolute disgrace...mind you if I were Essendon I would be bracing for a VERY fired up Hawks outfit in response

Te amusing part in all of this is the AFL have now painted themselves into a corner. They are on the eve of the finals, and as we all know, players become more aggressive as they search for premiership honours.

There WILL be incidents far more serious than Franklin's, and plenty of them. The AFL will have nowhere to go. They will have to suspend, or they may be asked to explain their actions to a higher authority.

Players will have taken notice of this, and I imagine the first 2-3 weeks of the finals being the tamest in living memory as players will be too scared to lay bumps or tackles in case they make contact with the wrong part of the body, and boom .. rubbed out for the rest of the finals.

However, we will still see players ducking into and sliding under tackles because the practice will never be safer, and if players want to hurt opposition players, they are still permitted to pin the arms to their sides in a tackle and ram their opponents heads into the turf.

Footy's a funny game.

They should have taken the one week. The new soft girly rules clearly say you can't hit the head, Cousins went off with concussion and did not return. Although a few have slipped through, Buddy isn't the only one done for that this year. The match review panel is a joke, so inconsistent. How can Cam Mooney clearly punch Ryan O'Keefe in the face a few weeks ago and have no case to answer, and Buddy and others accidentely make contact to the head trying to lay a fair bump getted rubbed out. Wake up AFL the ideas you copied off Rugby League don't work.

There was two from last weekend they showed on the Footy Show tonight that you would have to question as to why they weren't cited (and likely suspended by the tribunal)

Haha!! Nice one Mal.

I'm still wondering why the Richmond player who decked Osborne straight afterwards, and cost his team a double goal, never got matches. Every fair minded footy fan is currently scratching their heads as to the inconsistent attitudes of officialdom, and to what is or is not malicious.

Personally I would regard a punch from behind when the player isn't watching to be far more pre-meditated and malicious than a mistimed bump, but maybe that's just me. Maybe it's because I was taught to deliver bumps and not to belt people when they aren't looking. Gee, we oldies had some strange ideas according to the incumbent custodians of the game, didn't we?

After this, supporters will be sucking in their breath each time a star player of their club contests a ball in an aggressive manner. It really is becoming a game for fairies.

1. I hate the Hawks but the Buddy decision is a joke.

2. An even bigger joke is that people pissed off about the sanitisation of Australian Football are turning to Soccer. LMAO.
