The AFL is also investigating the appointment in October of coach Chris Scott as chief of leadership and performance at Morris Finance, which is also a major sponsor of the club. Morris Finance has been a sponsor of Scott for the past five years, in addition to their long-standing role with Geelong for the past 14 years.

I tell you what, you're not going to believe this.

THE AFL has completed its review of Chris Scott’s third-party deal with a club sponsor.

But the league won’t reveal whether it has forced Geelong to include the sponsorship money in its soft cap.

Scott was late last year announced as the chief of leadership and performance at Morris Finance – a major and long-term sponsor of the club – in a “newly-created” role.

Morris Finance has been a sponsor of the Cats for 14 years and a partner of the premiership coach for the past five years.

The AFL argue that by revealing what decision it had made would mean every player, staff and coach with a commercial arrangement would need to have their club’s cap position publicly stated – a door it does not wish to open.

The league also denied it had launched an investigation into Scott’s deal, as per reports last year, instead saying it routinely reviewed the third-party arrangement like all other proposed commercial contracts across the competition.

The AFL said Scott’s Morris Finance job and the soft cap implications – if any – were a matter for Geelong.

Cats chief executive Steve Hocking would not comment on the financial implications of Scott’s role with the company, but said the club was completely satisfied with the outcome and that the coach had done nothing wrong.

Under rules introduced in 2024, senior coaches can have 20 per cent of their salary paid outside the soft cap.

Speaking in October, Scott said the arrangement had been ticked off between management, the club and the AFL.

It’s understood the AFL initially had serious concerns over Morris Finance’s use of intellectual property after the company used a photo of Scott in Geelong kit to announce the new deal.

All senior coaches, assistants and football staff are paid under the AFL’s cap, which is set at $7.675 million in 2025 – a $400,000 increase from last year.

If it was all above board they would have said so.

Scott was a regular on AFL360 and said how hard it is to be an AFL headcoach and wouldn't recommend it due to how many hours are required to be a senior coach and now he can find the time for a second job

This is the bit that is interesting

The AFL argue that by revealing what decision it had made would mean every player, staff and coach with a commercial arrangement would need to have their club’s cap position publicly stated – a door it does not wish to open.

The league also denied it had launched an investigation into Scott’s deal, as per reports last year, instead saying it routinely reviewed the third-party arrangement like all other proposed commercial contracts across the competition.

It's not like the AFL to admit that is prepared to sweep shit under the rug. But it also says every player, staff and coach so if it's ok, then it's good club management and not something that only applies to Geelong. But to me it does mean that the more resourced clubs are in a position of advantage. While they are talking about Geelong in this article, image St Kilda trying to compete with Collingwood for commercial arrangements.

And there's layers to that, too.

Whilst there is a soft cap in place the senior coach would have better resources below him at the more financial clubs ( West Coast bucking that trend ) allowing those coaches more scope for work outside the club.

It might not be a profitable venture for Scott short term given it's in the soft cap, but long term he's laying a solid foundation for post football. Much like players who moonlight in the media while still playing.

Take your blinkers off and think objectively.
Asking a former COO of a club to do an audit on that same club independently...over a period where he was COO...cmon

Nothing to see here.

Nope, just something that remotely passes the pub test would suffice.

Old mate won't find anything that would cause him to lose his AFL gig, would he?
