Primus was fairly instumental in the 2004 premieship, even if he didnt play on the day.

His coaching not so constructive unfortunately.

While its not a bad article for the blinkered Melbourne public it lacks a lot of factual creedence and fails to make any mention of the Victorian AFL basket cases. He's written this piece as though the AFL haven't been bailing out Melbourne, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs, and that they haven't had their failings on field and off field. He also fails to mention some of the positives about Ports entry into the AFL and that the VFL/AFL have had a huge meddling hand in the complex fabric that is the modern South Australian Football scene. But he wouldn't, he's a navel gazing Victorian scribe that has really never had to give up any heritage to help create a Clayton's national competition.
His facts are wrong about the AFL pumping $9m into Port, they have only given Port $1m, any money that the AFL have forwarded to Port has been as a loan via the SANFL of which the SANFL is responsible for paying back. This is not including the millions that the SANFL have given Port previously.
To sum up, Patrick has revelled in taking a massively negative swipe at Port Adelaide and Duncanson, some warranted but if anyone has ever heard this guy on SEN with Kevin Bartlett in a morning you'd understand just what a miserable ponce this man is. And I thought Rucci was a miserable ponce!

Admittedly, Smith does make some valid points, but some equally good points made by Cutterman too.

In saying that, and at the risk of taking this off topic, I always think of this when I hear anything about Patrick Smith..

http://www.thelatemail.com.au/the-late- ... -chuckers/

Best known in these parts as a belligerent columnist first with The Age and then The Australian, Smith was equally aggressive as an opening bowler for district club Prahran in the 1970s. He once copped a two-week ban for following through and chesting a batsman to the ground. Smith was also said to have a questionable action, although he was never called. In one Victorian second-XI match against Western Australia, he opened the bowling with Rodney Hogg.

Leading umpire Bill Smythe, looking on from the boundary, was heard to declare that Smith was a chucker. Smythe went to Prahran training the next week, and after watching on from square-leg, suggested to Prahran and ACB chairman Bob Parish that Smith needed some remedial work on his action. It hasn't compromised Smithy's writing style, though. A personal favourite was the 2000 column in which he suggested that "If (Brett) Lee's delivery is deemed a little chuck, then Muralidaran's is the equivalent of projectile vomiting."

Classic!
In all honesty I think the guy has a good eye on football, as does Rucci, it's just when they get an opportunity to jump on a carcass they become rancid, what's worse is when there's no carcass to be had and they start angling for one. Why does the media gave to get it so wrong :)

Might need to get your facts right, Nth Melbourne have not received hand outs from AFL like Port has.

So Dutchy, what you're saying is that North haven't received money from the AFL "gratis", not a forward of dividends from the current year, but that North have received nil extra payments from the AFL for payment of coaches, football operations etc. Keep in mind Port have ONLY EVER RECIEVED $1m from the AFL gratis.
Frankly I don't believe that.

Smith writes the occasional insightful opinion piece.

But he's too caught up marvelling at his own (lack of) wit most of the time.

This time it was Port's turn to cop a sermon from the mountaintop.

Nothing in that piece that hasn't been reported before.

And people bag out The Rooch for lazy journalism.

Then again, Smith isn't really a journo these days...

Port haven't received "equalization" payments and NM haven't received handouts.

Frankly I don't believe that.

The roos have never recieved money for coaches, football operations ect
they have recievedtheir dividends early and they have received money for the equalisation funds that the afl brought in for clubs that dont get block busters
these clubs that have reived that same fund include melbourne, bulldogs
in the past the other clubs that have funds paid under the same scheme are as follows
richmond,st kilda,swans,lions and hawks
some of these clubs now no longer recieve money because of their present status because of hard work and good financial management
my beloved roos have always struggled because of a number of reasons icluding small supporter base,no friday night slots,no block busters, bad financial management(ansett era),results and by the last four financial reports i have recieved areana rent where they have to draw 28000 people to break even
