Jim, you are joking aren't you? He's laughing all the way to the bank. Travis wont leave. Collingwood will do some third party deal (which will be above board, no complaints here) which will mean despite only getting 700k a year, he'll pocket heaps more from off field contracts. The AFL have sanctioned against it, but they're stuffed legally. So if Collingwood can "only" offer him 700k but he can get 2 or 300 from the Footy Show or some hair tint mob, he'll be very happy to stay.
Joking about what?
Im sure GAJ is wishing he stayed at the Cats and won another flag.
Geelong would have done some media/advertising deals so i dont think he is that much better off financially than if he stayed in Geelong
This game goes by them quickly enough. If you've won a premiership and a Brownlow, what more is there to play for? He can make a motza up there, so why not I say.
So if I'm Cloke (and I'm not), I might be driven by two things.... money or chance to win another premiership. The chance to win another premiership MIGHT cost him money and the extra money might cost him a chance at another premiership. That's a heavy decision to make given that his dad was at the club as well.
If it were me, I'd look at what chance I have of playing in another premiership at Collingwood (chance of this is fairly high) plus the chance of being marketable outside of football, take into consideration the salary cap issues. Or I can move to a new club and take a chance on their premiership aspirations, knowing I'm on good coin but have a higher risk that my chances of being in a premership are decreased.
I remember reading that, as part of the decision to move up there, GAJ and GAJ snr determined that there was more of a market during and after football to market the Ablett name. No brainer IMO. Football and premierships are temporary financially, branding and marketability are permanent. Look at all the guys who have won premierships who haven't got a penny to their names. Overall, who's better off? Bill Brownless or Keating from Adelaide... Luke Darcy or Kane Johnson... the list goes on.
In their clubs and supporters mind, they're worth squillions but it doesn't put food on the table.
