I wouldn't expect many to agree with those rankings, but that's how I see it.

Yep, same order for me too.

In the history of football, this may be the first time someone has said..."James Hird, Yeah, he went alright"

For me-
Voss
Hird
Buckley
Roo

You rate Buckley as a better kick than Darren Jarman?

I don't know about Lebron, but I rate Buckley's kick better.

Not a slight intended... Hirdy was a gun... But I look at these guys... Buckley... Best kick I've ever seen. Voss... Perfect footballer. Tough... Skilled... Great Leader... Added triple premiership Captain and a Brownlow... Speaks for itself... Roo is, a South Australian icon, a toughnut through and through, midfielder, key forward, didn't matter, he could do it... James Hird? Gun though he was, there's no epitath that sticks out for him... Could he play up forward? Yeah, Was he a gun midfielder? Yeah, but The other three, I have footy moments stuck in my mind- and always will... passages of play, statistical feats of dominance.... But Hirdy- he hugged a fan and abused an umpire... I know he was a gun, but he doesn't stick out as having something Voss or Buckley miss (except a Premiership medal... Suck shit Buckley....)

If Roo played for one of the big three Melbourne teams, most would have him number 1. 8 All Australians, Brownlow Medal, B&F's and u still rate him as 4  I don't think people really understand the leadership qualities of the guy. half back, half forward, guts, full forward. he had it all. he's my number 1 in that lot.

Totally agree Bum Crack

1) Roo - was able to be better for longer as his 8 all aussies suggest and this despite putting his body on the line every week and playing it very hard
2) Voss - just as hard as roo
3) Hird
4) Buckley

I am amazed at the amount of people in this state that put roo 4th, that south aussie inferioriety complex coming out IMO

And maybe we could say you voted Roo ahead of the others because he is South Aussie. Is it possible everyone else is wrong and you are the only person with perspective?

You make good points about Ricciuto, but please tell me .. which boxes doesn't Hird tick in your criteria? Hird was also a key position player, both CHF & CHB.

Hird was a fantastic player and he and roo are almost level pegging. i just think roo isn't getting the credit he deserves.

No riverland bias there either hey BC,

Buckley Number 1 for me, carried the biggest football club in Australia for many years.
Voss- 3x premiership captain hey, enough said
Hird- probably the most highly skilled played of the lot, could play any position on the ground.
Ricciuto- poor mans Voss ;)

How come you're always drinking with them?

For mine - Hird is about my favourite all time player (after John Platten). He had everything, could play just about any position, was inspirational and freakish. He did the normal and then did the sublime.

1) Voss - if you look up the term 'inside player', there is a picture of him. Played all his footy right in the thick of the battle
2) Ricciuto - about a millimetre behind Voss, how he managed to squeeze 300+ games with his game style astounds me.
3) Hird - at his very best, the best player of all these, but didnt play at that level for long enough.
4) Buckley - unbelievable skills, and champion player but chuck a ball in the middle of these 4 guys and he is least likely to win it.

Really though, we are splitting hairs - all absolute champions.

Good point BC, he probably would be but Voss didn't play down there either.

I'll go

1. Voss
2. Hird
3. Roo
4. Buckley

Interestingly though, the HOF has many criteria to meet beyond ability to kick and catch and of those 4, Buckley raised the ire of the VFL/AFL when he almost refused to play for the Bears (I don't like the draft but the rules are the rules) and only agreed to play for them on the promise they cleared him to Collingwood at the years end.

He was young I know but hardly honourable
