My suspicion is that the club realise that they have much work to do in terms of player development to make the side competitive at the top level and perhaps they feel that is where Craig excels in the player development type role.

Its fairly easy to take pot shots at Neil Craig, yet few people that are observers really can coach at the same capacity as Craig and would have little idea of what is required in the role. So for an outsider its fairly difficult to critisize, the one concern that I would raise is based on comments from Neil Curleys observations on Craigs coaching in finals where it was raised that Craig appeared slow to make decisions and perhaps had to much faith in specific players to do the job required. Clearly Craigs finals record then comes up for examination along those lines.

Its easy to look back and be an expert, yet most agree that when the Crows rushed out and signed Shaw as coach that it set the club back several years. Whatever the decision made at this time has the same capacity to do the same damage if the club makes the wrong decision. Suppose Craig does get the sack, who replaces him then? An untried Sanderson or Bickley? Does the club throw money at Malthouse to get him away from the Director role to the Senior Role at Adelaide? Do they try and poach someone like Eade and hope for a better result? Plenty of questions and no doubt mountains of critiscm of any choice made in any direction.

Great post Sojourner. Sums up the situation beautifully.

It hardly set them back several years as the bloke who replaced him took them to back to back flags instantly. I believe the only thing letting craig down is the inability to make crunch decisions during a game. The crows have far from the worst list going around and if he can develop that other side to his coaching the crows have the ability to be contenders in the next 3-5 years.

Good post Soj .. However the Crows like most clubs, still have to retain a high level of marketability and I get the feeling that the natives are more than restless with Craigy, and given he's been at the helm for quite a long time now, Im not so certain they will up his contract.

To that extent, you would think it would take a favourite son of sorts (Bickley, Bassett, Goodwin etc) or a popular imposing figure (I dunno, a Viney perhaps for eg) to put smiles on the natives dials - Whether anyone suitable along those lines would be available is another matter.

I reckon (bar an abominable season or majorly exceeding expectation) they might give NC a contract for 2012 and hope that Goodwin develops well in his role at Windy Hill, but that's purely guesswork.

Perhaps a role in player development is his best role with someone ( who we might call ) a little more flexible and experimental in an on field sense as the head coach?

Forget about the Strut blokes Blackbirds. Go the Port way and get a Norwood man in there.

I reckon he's more of a Strut man, even though I know he was once a Redleg.

Played in 2 premierships (and coached them) at the deadlegs, none at Sturt. He's a Norwood man.

I agree that is Neil Craig's weakness and it is why I couldn't rate him above B.

Craig is average. Last season you saw all to late the hidden pace through the middle. But for some reason it took way too long to even try it. Thats the problem.

Personally i think Neil Craig is really good at developing younger players, with both their mental and pyshical attributes.

He is brilliant at having players in top condition when they take to the field.

Where he lacks imho is that at times he does have to much faith in players and can be slow to make game day moves which seem blatantly obviouse to everyone else, he seems like a very stubborn person.

Also its no secret that he is not a 'fun' coach to play under and at times has a bit of a robot mentality when it comes to preparation.

Fair call mate IMHO.

I think coaches need to have the confidence and courage to stand firm in their beliefs, but there has to come a time where reasonable assessment comes into it and you put a particular cue back in the rack for a period of time.
