Will Port ever hire a coach that isn't "one of their own"?

How do you determine that?

If you dare suggest the game plan didn't change during Primus' caretaker stint I'll scream my guts out.

Is it sustainable? How will he go coaching his "mates" ???

Dunno. Maybe we should ask Paul Roos.

I'm not sure Port have all that many players left from Primus' playing era. Maybe only Brogan, Chad, Kane & Cassisi.

I guess he showed during his tenure that he was prepared to make some tough calls (motlop, Chad) and looked like he was getting the best out of Ports inconsistent players - Westhoff, Ebert etc.

I think Port were desperate to get an outsider but in the end Primus coaching record and the development of quite a few players could not be ignored.

Hopefully it proves to be the correct decision.

Is what sustainable?

Fair to say modern AFL football clubs are not coached by one individual but a group of coaches, sure, ulitmately it comes down to one man answering for the performances but the coaching staff Primus puts around him will be just as critical as his appointment. More and more it seems head coaches are more player managers than tacticians, as demonstrated by coaches sitting on the bench ( Harvey, Craig, Ratten, Hardwick etc ). The assistants doing the bulk of the tactical moves from upstairs.

Perhaps in some way having a leader who inspires his players, coupled with coaching nouse is the way to go. From what I understand the procedure to find the next coach was arduous and thorough in the extreme, sure, critics will say Primus was the easy choice, but as member I must have faith in the decision made and I do.

I think Primus will sound out some new assistants and freshen up the place with youthful leadership from the coaching box.

Bring on 2011 - for God knows 2010 was ratshit.

Exactly

Just because you are an assistant doesn't necessarially make you any more of a "mate" than the head coach and therefore any reappointed head coach has the same question mark using this logic.

Stepping up from assistant to senior coach from one year to the next v the senior coach going around again = not that different in terms of a pre-existing relationship with the players

Roos finished playing in 1998 didnt return to the footy club until 2002, first full year of coaching 2003. Not comparable.

Dutchy on my records the only players on the current list who actually played with Primus are Salopek, Pearce, Cornes x 2, Brogan, Cassisi, Chaplin, Ebert, Pettigrew, Surgan. Of those Cornes x 2 and Brogan would have played the most games with him. All 3 will likely be gone in the next year or so.

So while I take your point about Primus never having left the place - he hasn't been on the field with any of them for 5 years and only played with 10 out of 40. As to how much Primus is their "mate" compared to say how much say Scott is "mates" with the NM players is something we can only speculate about.

I'm not sure if it's the "mates" thing or that he never left Port that's your main issue?

For mine, if he's the best man for the job (in the budget) then he's the best man for the job. Good luck to him.

10 out of 40 yes, but almost all are in their top 22, so 9 out of 22

History shows that this doesnt work

I was at the press conference today at Alberton amongst other meetings down there and the atmosphere was rather good. He will be senior coach for the next 3 years but i suspect it has been underwritten for longer. Haysman may have let it slip that it would be for 5 but in his defence might have just been a slip of the tongue. Primus was very upfront with his thoughts and ideas and spoke very well when asked tough questions by the Journo's. I htink its a fairly good move to have him at the healm. Not everyone is going to be happy but i tell you right now some of the things that happened this year will never happen again and surprises are on the way.
