On Edwards specifically, I'm not sure why he was dropped in the first place- plenty of worse players still in the 22.

On farewell games, I think there is a place for them, but honestly, after 200, 300 plus matches, if you don't know your time is up, then there's something wrong.

You look at (Crows) Bassett, he retired and was still good enough for their best 22, and you look at (Swans) Everitt, who clearly had no idea.

There's a place for farewell games, but you certainly have to justify your spot.

Look at it in terms of where the team is in the season.
Adelaide are 2 - 7 and there season is over. Hene its not going to hurt if it was handled correctly.

I reckon that's irrelevant mate (just my own view) - As I said, if it's available to 1 it should be available to all imho.

There's probably a place now for AFL clubs to have policies in place for this sort of thing, so that all players are aware of the lay of the land well in advance.

I think they are OK in certain circumstances -

> Its the last 3-4 of the season
> The club has no mathematical chance of making finals
> The player has played over 200 games
> He has given significant service to the club off the field

Given the above it seems to fit in well, I dont like it being manufactured, esp when its not even halfway thru the season why you would have one before the last month of the season makes no sense to me.

As Matty Clarke said this morning Crows win tonight and next weeks game gives them still a small shot at correcting their season and only be 2 wins out of the 8 with 11 games to go. ANything can and could happen.

OK, after pondering over it for the past few days I was probably being a bit precious, I can see that you are "old school" Yetti and have a more conservative view on todays commercialised game. Yes, Bruce Doull wouldn't have made a spectacle of it which gave myself a new look on the matter.
Those that bow out of the game on their own accord leave with dignity and know when it's time to hand the baton to someone younger, those that hang around for the extra dollar or in hope for an extra game are just clogging it up for someone else to have their turn.
Robert Harvey and James Hird were examples of this, could've gone on longer but called it on their terms.

Farewell games are just a medie beat up to make everyone feel loved and special. Yes its nice for them to have a game to finish on, but not every circumstance allows this to happen. Unfortortunatly for Tyson this has been the case!

I also think if a club is having a farewell match it set's a dangerous precedent, because if 1 gets one all should get one, and I don't think that can work.

If it was Geelong or Collingwood then you should probbaly just walkaway.

i will think you find that Geelong were going to keep Tom Harley on for two games this year with his second game being his 200th and his final
