Drunken Brendan Fevola accused of sexual assault at BrownlowsArticle from: Font size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment October 09, 2009 01:53pm
NEW Brisbane Lions full forward Brendan Fevola has been accused of sexually assaulting a female Herald Sun journalist at the Brownlow Medal count.
Fevola - whose trade deal went through just hours ago - is alleged to have assaulted the journalist during a boozy rampage at Crown Casino.
3AW radio presenter Neil Mitchell today aired details of the September 21 assault by the 2009 Coleman medallist.
Mitchell reported several sources had told him Fevola harassed and intimidated the Herald Sun reporter on Brownlow night.
"I have been told by several sources that he followed her (to) the toilets at Crown (and) physically intimidated her,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell reported several sources had told him Fevola harassed and intimidated the Herald Sun reporter on Brownlow night.
"I have been told by several sources that he followed her (to) the toilets at Crown
"One of the reports says … (he was) sort of grabbing at her.
"It was certainly of a sexual nature."
Mitchell said both the Carlton Football Club and the AFL were aware of the allegations, but the journalist in question had not filed an official complaint to the police or the league.
A Victorian rumour website has also posted details of Fevola's alleged indiscretions.
Herald & Weekly Times editor in chief Phil Gardner today said the Herald Sun’s primary concern was for the health and wellbeing of the journalist.
“Our reporter was attending the Brownlow as a representative of the Herald Sun in a working capacity,” he said.
“In accordance with our strong workplace policies and practices, the Herald Sun has provided a wide range of support and services to our reporter. And we will continue to provide this support.
“Herald Sun management has kept the AFL and other relevant parties regularly updated since the incident.”
Fevola's antics on Brownlow night triggered Carlton’s shock decision to offer him up for trade.
In a statement today, Blues president Stephen Kernahan said he hoped Fevola’s move to Brisbane would provide an opportunity to continue his career in a new environment.
AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson said this afternoon the claims were being taken seriously by the AFL.
“We have got a respect and responsibility policy that has been in place now for five years now and any contraventions of that policy will be viewed very seriously by the AFL,” Mr Anderson said.
“We have spoken to the employer of the woman involved, we have provided her support and access to counselling and we have also made it clear that the AFL is ready to act on any breach of what we expect of our players to behave towards woman.''
When asked if the reporter had made an official complaint, he said: ''No, and we have respected this point. We have provided support and indicated we are ready willing and able to act as soon as she would like to talk to us.''

Hopefully the shock of seeing the tape afterward, and being traded, will motivate him to really mean it this time...magpie in the 80's wrote:Lion Fev vows to put wild days behind him

Voss said key forward Daniel Bradshaw, who was offered as trade bait before rejoining the Lions, wasn't retiring and would play next season.
In a move that will have other clubs already searching for answers, he insisted Brisbane could field a forward line that included Fevola, Bradshaw and All-Australian Jonathan Brown.

We'll be right. Far to much focus on passing to Fev made it easy for other teams to clear the ball by double teaming him. Now its an opportunity for others to spread the load. Kreuzer could an intersting prospect up forward with Warnock in the ruck.
People talk of a Lions super forward line, I think you'll find Bradshaw in defence or close to retiring. Glad the original deal failed. Henderson looks like he can play even though he is a couple of years off.
Hopefully we can capitalise on the 12th pick.

But if you think about that logically, it meant that at ground level we had Betts, Gartlett, Yarran etc who couldn't position themselves to beat their opponent - ie no one!

Turbo, I hope you're right. Either way we are going to have to completely revamp our forward line. I think Fisher is really going to have to stand up. Putting all our expectation on either Cloke or Kruezer is a massive ask. I hope a key forward, between now and pre-season draft becomes disgruntled with their contract negotiations and puts themselves into the draft.

I'll be honest I can't see Fisher being consistent for a whole year and we should delist Cloke. I reckon he is only saved because we aren't blessed with too many experienced big blokes
