Kelli:

"Timer on and it's into the onions, there's an early spill but she recovers well and layers them neatly out on the chopping board."

"Gathers the knife, it's looking sharp and it cuts through the onion exterior ever so sweetly, here's the tough part, the fumes are getting to her and the eyes are really welling up."

"Moves quickly into dice mode and that knife is really working, quickly spins away from the chopping board and out of trouble."

"Turns the stove on and applies the pan, gently drrrrrizzles some oil in, that'll take some sting out for the mean time."

"Returns back to the chopping board and the heat it on, works through the last of the dicing and eeeaaases them into the pan. Beautifully done,"

"Reaches for the beef, and with that it's quarter time."

Dind't mind her but if she is not careful she just might get arrested by the cliche police.

When you haven't played the game, cliches are pretty much all you have going for you.

Was reading this one for a while and pondering whether to say anything...

Watched the game in question and didn't hear much wrong to be quite honest. Identified the players fine, wasn't over the top with excitement in inappropriate spots and was succinct with her call. For someone who'd never called on TV before, sounded fine to me.

Surprised at some of the comments on here to be truthful. Commentary is not easy firstly - nowhere near as easy as just stepping into a box and doing it. Kelli has a much bigger barrier than most to overcome, that of the perception that because she hasn't played the game, she is somehow less qualified. Caroline Wilson, IMHO, is one of the best football journalists in this country and also has the same perception after all this time. In this day and age, I really thought that was outdated by now.

Kelli Underwood deserves to be encouraged and supported in having a go at breaking a barrier that many of us never thought would happen. I'd like to think in 12 months, people will be looking at the quality of her calling as a commentator, not as that of a "girl calling footy".

Sorry if this offends anyone.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

No need to apologise CK but but remember poor commentary is poor commentary regardless of gender.

LOL That's what I thought. I thought her number one downfall is not knowing all of the players names. I cringed at the amount of time she said 'Geelong player'. Do your research Kel.

Agreed DW.

Dennis Cometti, Bruce McAvaney, Steve Quartermain to name but a few. In time she will develop her own Kellism's...

Two separate issues in this for me.

1. Kelli Underwood - was quite monotone but called the happenings of the game well which I liked. Most commentators take it for granted that you can see what's happening and who's got the ball. I thought she called the game fairly well in comparison to some others.

2. Female commentators - there is a place for them but they need to be given opportunity on merit, not general tokenism.

she actually let the picturs do the talking which was refreshing. her tone did differentiate but there was often not much to get excited about. she did a better job than i could have - havig tried to commentate some gf's for the blacks its no easy feat.

tried sometimes to be a bit too clever but time and practice will help here.
numbers and players didn't always match up according to other commentators; this wouldn't have helped.

if the league (as all clubs) ae trying to get larger female involvement what's the problem? at least she knew her stuff unl;ike that awful cricet fiasco.
always forgive your enemies...nothing annoys them so much

What a silly statement you have made AH, footballers are the biggest users of cliches there are within the football community. They are taught to speak in cliches so as not to offend anyone or place themselves above their team mates.
They then transfer to the commentary box and use them there.
Sorry it's not as pithy as your post about cliches oh sage one, I prefer to be a little more verbose.

Hey, I came up with this all on my own!!!!! Erudite enough for you AH?

Nope!

I'm sorry... I can't let that comment pass harmlessly by... Caroline Wilson is a complete and utter tool. The amount of shite I've heard come from her mouth just simply amazes me. She's typical of many footy journos these days who don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. I used to watch Footy Classifieds and just about every episode I wanted to punch her lights out.
