Exactly, I think Clarko is out of the question, unless he wants a shot at the title of being the best AFL coach of all time.

If it isn't Ratten, it would have to be Teague, I'd be pissed off if I went for Carlton and there was anyone else appointed, there's not a lot going around atm.

I should've iterated of all time, not since the VFL became the AFL.

How have Blues fans seen Daisy Thomas, particularly over the last 18 months? I don't watch Carlton as closely as their own supporters would, but most times I've seen him over this season and some of 2018 I reckon he's been pretty good, and has set good examples for his younger teammates.

correct

Depends on what metrics you use to determine success?
Several coaches have as many or more flags than Clarko.

I do, but I think anything pre-1950 isn't really worth entering into the debate.

Funny, while looking up coaches on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VFL/AFL_records

Someone has edited :

Most possessions in a game - 69 Jack Lukosius 2019 v Collingwood

Most goals in a game - 26 Ben King 2019 v Collingwood

And if you wanted to be pedantic and say AFL only then Matthews is in the conversation. Took a crap Collingwood side and turned them into a Premiership side and then did the same at Brisbane

Guys like Hafey, Jeans, Matthews, Sheedy, Parkin off the top of my head are all in the mix

It really is apples and oranges.
Norm Smith
Allan Jeans (23 years between first premiership and last)
Tommy Hafey
Ron Barassi
Leigh Matthews

Funny how Hawthorn seem to be a common factor.

I'd have John Kennedy Sr. ahead of Clarko. Took over as coach of Hawthorn when they'd been a basket case for decades (look up their record for their first thirty years in the VFL) and led them to a premiership.

Imagine Gold Coast going on as they are now, for another 25 years, without playing finals, then finally becoming a decent side and winning a premiership - that was Hawthorn in 1961.

Kennedy coached Hawthorn in 5 grand finals for 3 wins.

I’ve wanted him moved on every year until last year.
Wasn’t a fan at all.
But he’s been very good this year and deserves another year.
He’s been consistent and injury free this year and by all reports is a leader around the club with the younger guys.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

Yeah he seemed the fall guy, and understandably an odd recruit for the rumoured price in a young rebuilding side but from what I've seen in that period you mention he's probably been worth plenty to the youngsters around him.

Better but only because he's now not taking up 700k of salary cap space.

In those days you could bring in players. Clarko clearly hasn't been able to do that outside of the existing draft/trade system. He's the best in my eyes slightly ahead of Matthews.

Deservedly and undeservedly so. Deservedly because he was on a crook ankle and took us to the cleaners (some would argue, not his fault) on a huge contract over 4 years. Undeservedly because we saw Betts leave on 50k less than Thomas got. People equated the two transactions and Thomas became the bad guy.
