GWS Season 2012

This situation (Brogan, Power & Cornes) we have here is not disimilar (IIRC) to the Mal Michael defection from Brisbane to Essendon in 2006, where I'm pretty sure Brisbane ended up with no compensation whatsoever?? Is my recollection how it played out, or am I off base? :?

I'm wondering if the AFL have changed the rules around this sort of practice occurring, as it's an obvious loophole that can be exploited by any player??

Like many others, I don't have an issue at all with Brogan or Cornes going to GWS - no doubt, they gave their best years to the Power - but fully understand that any Club in this fickle, current-day footy landscape would want to eke whatever compensation they can out of the situation, or in our case, try & safeguard against future list pillaging from expansion teams.

Also, I'm assuming (as I honestly don't know) that Brogan & Cornes had contracts that extended until the end of 2012, otherwise there's no way possible (surely?) that Port could consider listing them both as required players in 2012, forcing a trade situation to take place?? :?

Interesting scenario unfolding, indeed. ;)

Not really. Port are trying to protect themselves from having a younger player poached under the uncontracted player scenario that GWS have access to.

As much as it seems to smell that they're crapping on past players who they dont really want anyway, I cant blame Port really.

What Mal Michael did was as shifty as all hell.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

The scenario is that Port will receive players and or draft picks for Brogan and Cornes from GWS, meaning they will be considered trades and not go freely as uncontracted players, meaning GWS is still eligible to poach from Port next year.

Port have no position of negotiation in the trade as Cornes and Brogan are effectively worthless and could be taken by GWS with their last 2 selections in the draft. GWS have agreed however to do a trade so that Cornes and Brogan can come across next week in the trade period and begin their mentoring role now rather than a month down the track. I would expect very little for the trade, perhaps a 3rd round pick for both players.

whos word is that. I couldnt see Sewel leaving the hawks when they are so close to getting to the next level again. He is one of there on ballers that bleeds for them. I would be very surpirsed to see him go, but hey you I guess anything is likely to happen.

Why is his salary included in the Players Payments Cap?

I guess because otherwise the richer clubs would pay their players a direct salary of $100 per year and then employ their mother to make coffees in the cafeteria for $799,900.

So if the scenario arises and, say Silvagni comes back to the Blues as a Recruitment Manager, and in the mean time we recruit his son under the Father/son rule, then SOS seniors wage would have to be included under the players cap?

It's a valid point you raise Jabber. It must be that Scully's dad's appointment at GWS was linked directly somehow with the recruitment of his son. Whereas with normal father son selections there is separation between the appointments if both are made at different times on normal market rates.

That said, if SOS junior was paid basic wage and SOS senior was paid well above normal salary for his role then the AFL would look at it.

I think the AFL have made the decision that since both are starting their respective roles in the same season that it must be included.

If one of the Silvagni's was in their respective roles for at least one season before the other one arrives it could be entirely different ruling.

Looking at the pics - I'm guessing a generous meal allowance was the clincher for GWS in securing Mr Scully's services.
