Bit too general there, only 396 players take the field each week, so 1 in 4 is an A grader?

Id say top 30 in the comp would be A grade status.

Roughead is a beast. Second best forward in the comp behind buddy imo.

Hawthorn could have 10 a graders imo.

Top 100 might be too generous but 30 too few imo

I disagree, ( the beauty of this forum ) I think they've got 3 maybe 4 A graders and a stack of B+++ like the ones I mentioned.

( Roughead very nearly got the A grade from me )

I'll take some time over the coming days and make a list of who I think are each clubs A Graders.

Yeah, agreed, I think A Grader I think along the lines of an All Australian side. Maybe 25-30 absolute tops.

if you make the squad of 40 in any given year that is an "A grade" year imo.

I wonder how many players per team have done that, over say the past 5 years.

That would probably be a fair indication?

2 time all australian, coleman medallist, two time leading goalkicker for hawthorn, will be close to 500 goals at the end of this season, Probably the most versatile forward in the league, or at least in the top few.

Sorry Booney, you are wrong on this one :D

That is generally my guide.

Hence why I don't think Wines is quite A grade yet, as he wouldn't be a candidate for the AA shortlist.

Had we got a full season from Polec at 25+ touches and 1-1.5 goals a game, that would be an interesting debate.

Although- centre square mids generally fill the spots on the wing in the AA team, not genuine outside mids or wingmen.

I'll concede here. No problem with that.

What about Rory Sloane then?

Maybe its my bias, but there is no way he isnt an A grader, even though he hasnt been an all australian.

And Cale Hooker, Nick Smith, Will Minson, Sean Dempster - all have made AA teams in the past few years, but i probably wouldnt call any of them A Graders, even in that year. (Not disputing they didnt have an AA worthy year though)

edit: Booney conceded, but ill argue with him anyway given I had already typed this out :D

Sloane, yes.

Can an A grader be seen as a player who you just know will show up every week, week in week out?

If thats his role, and at that specific role he is in the top few in the comp, then yes.

Was just about to make the point that player position/role probably need to come into the equation in any rating system, given midfielders are likely going to make up 20 of the best 25-30 players. Then add Roughy, Buddy, Goldy and the like and it doesn't leave much room for anyone else.

I think almost all of us would agree.

Sydney only need to pay Buddy $1m per year for the next 8 years too!

If I were picking a team from all available players he would be my first pick. Most valuable player in the league.
