Adelaide confirmed it will pick Brad Crouch with 2nd pick in mini draft, effectively a Patty Dangerfield type pick with not being able to play first year (although Patty managed a few games).

Luke Brown looks to be a great pick up, the fact he took the kickouts for SA in the State Champs suggests he is an elite kick, as suggested by Noble. You can see him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N_rIHq5ass

Here is Crouch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RYaj1Zjx4U

Adelaide does now not enter the draft until pick 24.

Very happy with Luke Browns selection. Rate him highly, and Crouch looks like a goer!

Good work Noble

I reckon Noble and Co would be enjoying being freed up to go after the best deals this year rather than just coaches targets.

You might be right GN. Still at least two more trades to be made too. I think we will end up with Lynch from St Kilda

Rendell has made it pretty clear in the past in his role that the draft picks have been his with NC giving an executive OK at the end. Remember the time when Craig left trade week on the second day and left Rendell to it. Rendell has talked past draft picks they made where he and his team had been following the lad's progress for several years. I think the days of the coach directly influencing drafting and trading had stopped before this year.

We have to remember too that we have lost 2 very capable young players in Gunston and Davis that have allowed us leverage to get Crouch and Brown.

I only say this because there are posters on BF heralding a new era just because we made these trades yet Gunston and Davis came through the same recruiting team. Ideally we'd have Gunston, Davis, Brown AND Crouch.

Drafting is different to trading though Hondo. Fair enough to leave drafting up to your experts, but the movement of established players is a bit different. I'm pretty sure it would've been Craig pushing for the Tambling trade last year. Coaches would still have a pretty big say in what players are traded in and out of a club IMO.

No, from what Rendell has said publicly I get the impression that drafting and trading both come under the one banner of "recruitment". And I think they have to because often the trades involve draft picks. I recall Rendell last year standing right behind the Tambling deal and I got the impression it was his baby to a large extent. I think the trades would need more input from the footy manager and the coach but I don't recall the club ever saying that Tambling was a special Neil Craig project.

Essentially the trades this week are us bringing forward draft picks anyway. The word is that Crouch would have been a top 10 draft pick this year but now the Crows have been able to lock him in rather than hoping their pick 10 would have been enough. So I think drafting and trading are closely linked.

To provide a bit of an update/review:

Out: Phil Davis, Jack Gunston, Ivan Maric
In: Brad Crouch, Luke Brown, Tom Lynch

I know Phil Davis wasnt traded out but its effectively this considering we traded his compensation pick. We have also effectively had our first round pick downgraded from pick 10 to pick 24.

Retirements/Delistings: Brad Moran, Scott Stevens, Chris Schmidt (r), Jake Von Bertouch (r), Lachlan Roach (r)

Has trade week so far been a success? What else do Adelaide need?

I think they have done well so far. David Noble mentioned they are after a tall key postion player who can also ruck in the Leigh Brown mould.

I hope Chris Knights isn't the midfielder Essendon are after. It does appear either Jenkins or Hooker are the targets, Hooker a 196cm defender and Jenkins a rookie ruckmen.

Good summary Pat. Personally I think they have turned the negatives of players departing into some real positives. I'm particulary impressed with the way they have worked the expansion team scenario for gain after copping it in the date with Davis and Bock over the last couple of years. I hope we see a situation where we end up in front now as Crouch and Brown develop.

Josh Jenkins wouldn't be anywhere near enough compensation for Knights. Was playing in the CMFL (around Swan Hill) last year for Lake Boga, former basketballer who is definitely a project player at the bombers. Nowhere near the level of Cale Hooker.

As it stands at the moment I feel we are a little worse off, but as we had no say on the Davis scenario we have done well with the cards we were given.

Rumours suggesting Lewis Johnston may be involved in the Tony Armstrong deal. If we could get him in a straight swap or one of our midrange picks as well then I think we have more than covered the loss of Gunston.

We currently have picks 24, 35, 46, 64 and 89. David Noble suggested we would hold a pick for the PSD so 89 looks like a pass pick for us but would have trade value as likely the draft to go into the 100's this year.

I still don't think the Crows are done with yet regarding trade week. I have a sneaky suspicion that Brisbane will make a late ditch bid for Tippet that will be too good for Adelaide to ignore. The main sticking point will be a lack of big men if Tippet is traded.

Deal done, Johnston to Adelaide for Armstrong and pick 35, plus a late pick.

It will be interesting to see which late round pick this is. Adelaide only plan on using 2 draft picks, and saving a pick for the PSD. If Adelaide give away pick 64 (keeping 24, 46 and 89) we can assume they are done with trade week, as the number of their last pick wont matter if used for the PSD. However, if they trade 89 we can assume pick 64 has some currency, as it would become a live pick should they continue to trade and hand over either 24 or 46.

Happy with this trade, have covered Gunston although paid a bit. Will use either PSD or rookie list to get a backup ruckmen so still need to trade in a key back. Cale Hooker could be our man.

I heard it mentioned today that if the Mitch Clark deal to Freo gets done, Brisbane may off pick 10, pick 12 and a player (maybe Polec or Johnathon Griffren who might be part of the Clark trade) for Tippet. Would you want the club to take his deal?. I would it seems a pretty decent deal.
