Look, if I was Phil Davis I probably would've taken the money too.

Hell, I'm 20 years old with very dodgy shoulders and no guarantee that I will make a career out of football given that few people last more than 3 years on an AFL clubs list. I've shown enough to think I might be able to make it, but there's still a lot of variables that could change that in a heart beat.

I get a phone call from my manager saying "look buddy, GWS has just given me a call with a contract offer that will set you up for life. You can earn 3/4 of a million smackeroonies each year for the next 5 years."

That's like someone telling you you've won the lottery, all you have to do is move to Sydney to collect it. It's a no brainer really.

That said - as an Adelaide fan I can't deny that I wouldn't take pleasure in seeing the deal fail. I don't wish harm or ill fortune on Phil, not at all - but if the footy gods chose not to smile on this arrangement I would not be sad.

Kept going on about the back up in Mckernan (who will leave also) Talia and Thompson - all of 20 AFL games between them!!!!!

The better clubs signed their guns up over the last 24 months before GC & GWS could lure anyone.

Andrew Swallow has massive respect from me as he was GWS's No.1 target.

Hahaha hilarious! Swallow was far from the number one target. You don't think the crows tried to sign Davis to a further contract. Ofcourse they did!

GWS target Swallow
GREATER Western Sydney have plunged up to $900,000 at North Melbourne young gun Andrew Swallow to join its new team in 2012.

The stakes for Swallow are likely to heat up next year as there is already speculation that Swallow has signed with the new club.

His younger brother David, who starred for the Gold Coast this season, will remain at the Suns and the prospect of being closer to his brother will be an attraction to the Roo.

Even Kangaroos forward Drew Petrie said yesterday that he expected Swallow to think about the offer.

”I hope he stays because he has been a valuable player, especially the last two years, winning the best and fairest in ’09 and a close second [this] year,” Petrie said.

”He pretty much leads us in the midfield now. He is a hard-ball winner, he also pushes forward and kicks goals now, which is another string to his bow.

”I am hoping he stays but if it’s [true] the reported amount of money they are going to throw at him, at the same time you don’t blame people for going,” Petrie told SEN radio.

So he's worth on $50 K more than Davis (which I agree with - he's a better prospect than Davis) but worth over $100 k less a season than what Thomas, Swan and Scully are to GWS. Do you still think he (Swallow) was their #1 target Dutchman??

Like it or not he was their first target, he knocked it back and they moved onto the others. There was no mention of Swan, Thomas & Scully until after Swallow committed to the Roos.

So a professional athlete has been "shown the money" and ran from a club against the wishes of that club, the same club (amongst sixteen others) who will despite the wishes of 3-4 iprofessional athletes will cut them loose...

I seriously don't think the crows will loose out of this long term. They trade an 18-game, 20 year who has serious serious shoulder issues. Having had multiple operations including a shoulder reconstruction before turning 21 is a major issue. Instead the crows will recieve a pick presumably in the middle of the first round. His lack of loyalty is disappointing but we can;t really blame him given the situation his body is in. My opinion is that crows will be better off long term.

I'm using the term professional athlete not with respect to their sport but what their vocation is.

In that profession/career/vocation - athletes choose to go where it is best for them, sporting orgs choose who they want to have on their lsits/rosters etc.

Philosophically why should we worry/complain about a player making a decision on what is best for their professional career - based on the rules of that sport. There isn't going to be the same outcry when someone is unjustifiably delisted because of the same rules.

Sorry, where does it say he is/was their number 1 target? I think it is safe to say that the $1 million plus offers to scully, swan and Thomas make them more of a target, especially scully who they have said is high on their list of priorities.
