I'm really happy - FINALLY, live games on a Friday night. TFFT! I still don't understand the need for home and away to be played on FTA, when they've got three stations, mostly underutilised.... but that's hence why people turn to Foxtel in droves in the first place! If Ch 7 treated the viewing public with respect in the first place, most of us would be happy with the FTA service. As it is, we're not, so we look for other options.
The massive relief for me being a Carlton supporter is that there are no black spots any more, meaning if Port or the Crows play at the same time as Carlton (but not against them), I'll still get to see the Carlton game. A few times we've missed Carlton/Collingwood, Carlton/Essendon and other blockbusters because of this.
The pubs will think this is fantastic too I'd imagine.
The three big questions for me now are;
1. will the media still harp on about getting people through the gates? It's obvious it's not that financially important any more. TV rights are. And the NRL unfortunately is the template for this. They scrape together a crowd (if you can call it that) but their major revenue is via TV rights. The problem being, the NRL clubs themselves are struggling financially which has to be rectified (but that's another issue altogether).
2. will gate prices come down at the footy? You'd have to think they will - but I'm not holding my breath.
3. will Foxtel subscriptions go up in price to cover the $500 mill. they've forked out?
I heard a Herald Sun reporter say that Demetriou wasn't bothered about crowd figures being affected by live games against the gate because Demetriou reckoned it brought people to the game. His logic was "if it looks good on TV, how good would it be to be there". I don't get his logic at all personally. It's a choice. Not all of us have $60 bucks to go to a game, get a park, a hotdog and a couple of beers each week/fortnight. I'd rather spend that $60 bucks (if that's what it is) to stay home, in the warm, watching it live. Live games against the gate represent a CHOICE, not an advertisement to attend.
