Talk on the national game

Port Adelaide Season 2011

Postby hearts on fire » Sun Feb 06, 2011 6:59 pm

Well with the NAB Cup starting next week and the season approaching ever so quickly, why not start some talk on what hopefully will be a great season for Port.....

I personally think we will improve, but i have to keep my expectations realistic, i would be happy with a 6-8 finish in the top 8.....

All talk on the Power for season 2011!

FROM THE AFL SITE:

It's a tough start for Matthew Primus in his first season as Port Adelaide's senior coach, with his team travelling to Melbourne to take on reigning premier Collingwood in round one. The Power host West Coast at AAMI Stadium in round two, before heading back to Victoria for a meeting with Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

Port Adelaide has two away games in Darwin, against Richmond and Melbourne, while it has home matches at AAMI Stadium against Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn.

The two showdowns against Adelaide are in rounds four (home) and 19 (away).

ATM i rekon about 7-10th but i will update my prediction after watching some NAB games.

I expect Trengrove to have a massive year. Our forward line will have big competition for places with Westhoff, Motlop, D Stewart, Hitchcock, Schulz, Gray (tho he should play mostly in the middle), Cornes, and some young players coming thru. Cant see some of these players fitting in the forward line structure with others. So competition for places should be right up there.
The backline is taking shape and in a few years we will have a strong, and settled defensive unit.
In the middle is where we will struggle unless we can get all of Gray, Boak, Hartlett, Pearce, broadbent, Kane all fit and firing. Would think Boak would get tagged each and every week so the others need to help him out like geelong do with Ablett.
In ruck we might go ok if Broges stays fit, as with one less player on the bench, our versatile tall players in trengrove & stewart & westhoff can play their parts around the ground.
Go the Power in 2011, you never know!

How are Port looking in the ruck department this season?

Very light on fish. Brogan is our no.1 ruckman. After that we have designated ruckman in Lobbe, Redden, Bass with trengove and maybe westhoff that can pinch hit. If brogan goes down we are in diabolical trouble. I was hoping for a big nab cup from lobbe before he dislocated his shoulder. At least we will get to see the likes of redden and bass and see what they can provide.

I believe the only way to progress PAFC is to give brogan prob 1 or 2 practice games through the challenge series rucking in tandem with redden/bass and co. Only way these kids are going to learn is if we leave them be and be prepared to cop a flogging. Richmond last year was a prime example as they put their kids in the heat, lost the first 9 games, copped the criticism but there young players now enter 2011 with a year under their belt and may prosper (time will tell). Matty needs to bite the bullet and do the same with us this year. No point sticking with the fossils, go with the kids and be prepared to struggle for 2-3 years.

Chad cornes has to go immediately, he is beginning to embarrass himself. Marlon motlop needs to go, not up to it at all and is a dud imo. Wasnt impressed with butcher tonight but in fairness to the lad its his first hit out against big bodies after injury ruined his 2010 season, so im more than happy to see him bide his time in the sanfl this year (after all mckernan from the crows has been in the system now since 09 and looked real good last night).

We had alot of rookies play last night who got a taste of it but are still well off the pace of afl footy. Bring back brogan, boak, salopek, surjan, gray, hartlett, schultz and bring in jacobs who i think is ready made, possibly lobbe when fit and we will finish somewhere between 8-12 this year.

You know how he dislocated it ? It was a training session, but a Brazilian Ju-jitsu one. The Port squad have been doing this over the last weeks, once a week or so at a local gym. Young Lobbe thought he would try and push his luck in a sparring session with a more experienced opponent, and came off second best.

The Port coaching staff were not too happy at all...

Went and watched the lads train last week ( well, I was out visiting customers nearby ;) ) and Rodan looked amazing for what the bloke has just been through.

He was twisting and turning like you wouldn't believe. Very important to us and I hope he comes along well.

Trengove looked like he was ready to kill blokes at trining during a competitive drill. Nice to see, he really has some mongrel in him. I expect him to leave a mark on season 2011.

Bit of faith mate, i watched the richmond game via internet link, i thought we played very well in parts. Couple of silly/dumb turnovers killed us. Forward line looks very flexible and dangerous. Defence looks ok and a couple of youngsters coming through. Daniel Stewart was in defence for a while. Broadbent in the middle for a while. All learning experiences for the players. Would think we'd settle our line up a bit against geelong this week...maybe even brogan will play.
