Draws

Postby FlyingHigh » Mon Jun 14, 2010 10:32 pm

It seems everyone time we have a draw in the AFL, which is at most twice a year, someone wants to change the game again to ensure there is a result.

What do people think? Would they like to see extra-time at either AFL or SANFL level?

Personally I would hate to see extra-time. Our game is so different in structure and scoring variances compared to basketball, soccer and rugby league. The very occasional draw we have I believe adds to our game by adding another different range of emotions and responses, as well as numerically on the ladder.
Our game has been perfectly good with draws for over 100 years, so what would be achieved in changing it?

In today's game, a draw was probably a fitting result. Did Melbourne deserve to win having ten less scoring shots? And on Collingwoods side, bad kicking is bad football.

A draw is a draw during the minor round.

I'd dump the Grand Final replay option though.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

spot on!!
The AFL have changed too many rules already, leave the game alone for a while before it doesn't even resemble the game we grew up to love.

If two teams are equal after the alloted time, then that IS the result.

And that particular result is a big let down for players and supporters. I've always thought that the Draw should remain but looking at the fans and players yesterday changed my mind. Someone should go home happy in my book.

Leave it how it is for the minor round.

However, I would like to see the Grand Final follow similar rules to the other finals. Play extra time.

I was at the AFL GF last year, and for a while a draw looked like a real possibility. From a purely selfish, paying spectator point of view, a result is needed on GF day

Yep, the reaction from the supporters yesterday and comments from Luke Darcy in particular now have me questioning the stance I'd always taken on leaving it "as is" .. Still undecided but leaning toward finding a winner either way now.

Here's some traditions I'd like to see retained...

Protect the guy who goes in for the pill instead of pinging him
Don't pay a free to a guy who ducks his head
A fair hip and shoulder not being reportable

We currently have 3 different options in footy depending on what stage of the season we are at....how does that make any sense?

I say keep the draw. For starters, they're so rare it's barely worth having a set of rules for OT. Also, particularly at SANFL grounds without lights, lighting could become an issue if a draw happens around this time of year and a game went into OT.

The last draw occurred back when the Swans were still South Melbourne. It's a logistical nightmare for a national competition and unfair on interstate supporters who have to book months in advance and pay exorbitant prices to get there. Not only that, I believe the MCG had already been booked the weekend following the grand final. Where would they play it if they cant get the MCG?
It's all the SANFL's fault.

this really is a tough one. every one wants to see a winner at the end of the day but i like the draw aswell as it can be the difference between playing in finals footy or not making them. i really cant decide what i would prefer so i would stay with the way it is as it has worked for this long.
on a different note the collingwood v melbourne game that has sparked this debate was by far the best AFL game of footy i have seen all year if not for a couple of years, i am not a supporter of either side but it was just a super contest which i thought the umpiring was good and the way both teams went about it was very pleasing for me, i dont think either side could have played an extra 20 mins of footy afterwards as they were exausted, if footy is played like that every week i will be a happy man
